Telecity Group plc (formerly TelecityRedbus and before that Telecity ), is a European neutral center and data center hub. It specializes in the design, build and management of highly connected, resilient and secure environments where customers can house their telecommunications, internet and IT infrastructure. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange until it was acquired by Equinix in January 2016.

Histori

TelecityGroup plc is the result of the merger of three separate companies - TeleCity Limited, Redbus Interhouse Limited and Globix Holdings (UK) Limited. TeleCity Limited was founded by Mike Kelly and Anish Kapoor from Manchester University in April 1998 and opened its first data center in Manchester. At that time 3i Group invested £ 24 million in the Company.

In July 1998 Redbus Interhouse Limited was established, and began operating at its first data center at London Docklands in July 1999. In March 2000, Redbus Interhouse Limited hovered on the London Stock Exchange's main markets and in June 2000, TeleCity Limited's parent company, TeleCity plc floating on the London Stock Exchange.

In September 2005, TeleCity plc was privately owned by 3i and Oak Hill and in October of that year, Telecity Group plc was established and became parent company of Telecity plc and its group companies in November 2005. In January 2006, Telecity Group acquired > Redbus Interhouse plc , a rival business, produces two businesses, TeleCity and Redbus, trading under the name TelecityRedbus. Then in 2006, Telecity Group plc bought European assets from the US-based Globix Company.

Following the rebranding exercise held in August 2007, TeleCity, Redbus and Globix (UK) started trading under the name TelecityGroup. In October, Telecity Group plc is listed on the main London Stock Exchange market.

In August 2010, TelecityGroup acquired Internet Facilitators Limited (IFL), a carrier-neutral data center provider in Manchester. In August 2011, TelecityGroup acquired Data Electronics, which operates two neutral data-operators in Dublin, and in September 2011 UK Grid, the carrier-neutral carrier data center in Manchester was obtained.

TelecityGroup has announced it will expand its data center capacity across Europe. By the end of 2011, the company has 68 MW of available customer power and will be upgraded to 124 MW by 2016. As part of this expansion, the first phase of the new 9-MW data center was opened in Amsterdam (AMS 5) in early 2012 , and on July 2, 2012 Ed Vaizey, UK Communications Minister, officially opened the first phase of the 21 MW expansion at its London Powergate facility.

In August 2012, TelecityGroup acquired Tenue Oy, the provider of carrier neutral data centers in Helsinki, Finland. In November 2012, TelecityGroup acquired Academica, a data center and an IT service operator, also in Finland, delivering Finland's enlarged TelecityGroup a total of three data centers and 2MW of operational capacity; 7MW additional capacity will be unlocked at two new facilities in time.

In May 2013, TelecityGroup acquired SadeceHosting, a provider of data centers and services hosted in Istanbul, Turkey, and in November 2013, TelecityGroup acquired 3DC, an independent data center provider in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In May 2015, US data company Equinix announced it would acquire TelecityGroup for Ã, £ 2.35 billion. On November 13, 2015, the European Commission granted permission to offer Equinix to acquire Telecity. On January 15, 2016 Equinix announced that it has completed the acquisition of Telecity.

TelecityGroup data centers provide their customers with an environment where they can outsource their technical, web and IT infrastructure, so they are free to concentrate on their core business.

Connectivity services

TelecityGroup data centers host telecom networks, including fixed line networks, mobile operators, Internet service providers and content distribution networks. These companies use TelecityGroup data centers to connect to Internet exchange points, one another and their end customers, such as Internet content companies.

The company hosts the following major Internet exchange points:

Industry standards and accreditation

In April 2010, all European TelecityGroup data centers have been certified in accordance with international safety management standards ISO/IEC 27001: 2005 and ISO 9001: 2008 business quality management standards. In June 2010 TelecityGroup achieved OHSAS 18001 certification for the Occupational Health and Safety management system at entire company.

Environment

Because data centers consume significant amounts of power, operators are under increasing pressure to demonstrate environmental responsibility. For this purpose, TelecityGroup is a preliminary user of the EU Code of Conduct for datacentres, a voluntary code launched in December 2008 that promotes the adoption of best energy-efficient practices among owners and operators of data centers. TelecityGroup is also a member of The Green Grid. TelecityGroup is also the first specialist data center service provider to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard in the UK. The Carbon Trust Standard was developed by The Carbon Trust in 2007/08 to encourage good practice in measuring, managing, and reducing carbon by public sector companies and organizations. In June 2010 TelecityGroup achieved ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management throughout the company.
