Polls performed (plural: poll act ) are legal documents binding on only one person or multiple persons acting together to declare an active intent. This is, of course, not a contract because it binds only one party and states the intention, not the promise.

The most common use is a name change through a name change deed (often referred to simply as deed poll ). Deeds poll is used for this purpose in countries including England, Ireland, Hong Kong and Singapore. In the UK, polls can also be used to change the name of the child, as long as everyone with parental responsibility for the child agrees and the child does not mind. The child's parents conducted a poll on behalf of the child. In some other jurisdictions, a person may just start using a new name without any formal legal process. The general requirement is that the new name should be used exclusively and that the change should not be made with the intent to deceive. In Australia, before November 1, 2000, the previous name changes were made with a deed poll but now it is done by filling out the Name Change form.
The UK government provides a free web-based service to advise people on changing names using a deed poll. Some websites have set a fee for this service. Changing a person's name in the UK is so simple that the celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo does it spontaneously during the Celebrity Juice episode, legally adding the middle name of "Sheffield".

Other uses
Another common use is to divide the land into sections. For example, a plot of land may be partitioned (or carved) by a deed poll into Sections A and Sections remaining thereof. This form of poll is commonly used in Hong Kong.
A poll can also be used (in England and Wales) for Church of England pastors to give up their holy orders.
The origin of the term
The term "deed", also known in this context as "specialization", is common for signing written agreements that are not supported by the considerations of: seals (even if not literal but only a notional wax seal called by the execution formula, "Signed, sealed and submitted ", or even simply" executed as an act ") is considered as a necessary consideration to support the obligation. "Polling" is an ancient legal term referring to documents with straight edges; these distinguished deeds only bind one person from someone affecting more than one person (the "indenture", named at the time of the agreement to be written repeatedly on a piece of paper, and then the copy is separated by whipping or cut irregularly, ie "indented", so that each party has a document with appropriate tears, to prevent forgery).
