The BMW E32 is the second generation of BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1986 to 1994. It replaced the E23 and was initially available with a straight-six or V12 engine. In 1992, the V8 engine became available. In 1994, E32 was replaced by E38.
E32 introduces the following features for the first time in BMW: Electronic Damper Controls, V12 and V8 engines, double glazing, CAN bus electronic protocol, Xenon headlamps, traction control and dual zone climate control. The E32 750i is the first car to follow BMW's own speed limit of 250 km/h (155 mph). The 'iL' model is the first time that the long wheelbase option is offered by BMW.

Development and production
This style is credited to then-head stylist Ercole Spada and Hans Kerschbaum working under the guidance of then chief designer Claus Luthe. The design work began in late 1979, where in 1983 the 1: 1 scale model was presented and frozen in October 1984 for production June 1986.
Production of the BMW E32 series started with 735i in June 1986 and 730i in December 1986, ending in April 1994 with a total of 311,068 units built.

Features
Some of the luxury options featured on the E32 include integrated phones and fax machines, wine coolers, electronically adjustable rear seats and radio controls for rear passengers.
In 1991, the world's first series production of low beam Xenon high intensity headlamps (Litronic, only low beam) was introduced at 750iL. Other safety features include systems that automatically increase spring pressure on windscreen wipers to keep them attached to the glass at Motorway speeds.
E32 is the first BMW available with traction control (called Automatic Stability Control at the time, but ASC is not considered a stability control by modern definition). The initial version (ASC) reduces wheelpin by reducing engine power, while the newer version (ASC T) also implements the rear brake.
The car is also available in a long wheelbase version (shown by 'L' from German Lang , after the model number). These models have an extra foot space of 11.4 cm (4.5 inches) for rear passengers, with stretching the back door and body at this point.
Machine
During its lifetime, the E32 7 Series is produced with straight-six, V8 and V12 petrol engines.
The launch model consists of 730i/iL and 735i/iL, powered by a straight-6 M30 engine. Also available at the launch of the E32 is the 750i/iL, which is the first BMW to be sold with a V12 engine. The rated power output of 5.0 L L (305Ã, à ° C) in M70 V12 is 220 kW (295 b bhp).
In 1991, BMW began producing its first V8 engine in 17 years. The M60 V8 was introduced on the E32, along with the E34 5 Series. The 4.0-liter version uses the new 740i/iL model, and the 3.0-liter version replaces the six-straight M30 in the 730i/iL model. The top speed of 740i is electronically limited to 240 km/h (149 mph). Both V8 engines are coupled to a new 5-speed automatic transmission made by ZF. The Nikasil bore lining used on the M60 machine is prone to damage when used with high sulfur fuel.
Styling
The E32 is the first BMW to use an L-shaped tail lamp, which is intended to add safety and security from the rear view of the car. Other styling features include traditional Hoffmeister BMW beats in the rear window line and circular headlamps (the E32 is the last 7 Series that uses circular headlamps).
External, 'renal' grille BMW indicates which machine is under the hood: all 6 cylinder models have narrow grille, and wider grille is standard for V8 and V12 models. The narrow grille is available as an option on the E32 8- and 12-cylinder models.
Model
The official specifications are as follows.
* 135 kW (181 hp) for the 1986 model
** Top speed electronically limited
Custom models
750iL Highline
The BMW 750iL Highline is a top-of-the-line model of the E32, with many additional luxuries for full-leak rear passengers, dual radio controls, dual climate control with coolbox mounted on the center console, seats that electrically heated and rear adjustable, walnut veneer folding table, two crystal glasses neatly placed in coolers, foot rests and sun shields across the back/side windows. Complete with independent heating and ventilation, it also adds a second battery in the trunk and a second alternator to provide power for all these luxuries. The 'Highline' option pack costs more than 20,000 DM, and is only available on 750iL, so the total price is more than double than the base model of 730i.
Goldfisch prototype
The Goldfisch is a single prototype of the E32 735iL that is powered with a V16 engine. It was conceived in 1987 and was built in late 1988. Due to the length of the engine, the cooling system (radiator) was transferred to the trunk and additional vents were added at the rear.
Related cars
The E34 5 Series, introduced in 1988, has design cues similar to the E32. It also uses the same straight-6 M30 and M60 V8 engines, and several other parts.
E31 8 Series, introduced in 1989, uses the same M60 V8 and M70 V12 engine as the E32.
