Regional services are operated by independent carriers with United Express brands. Its main competitors are American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
United was founded by the merger of several airlines in the late 1920s, the oldest being Varney Air Lines, founded in 1926.
United has nine hubs, with Chicago-O'Hare being the largest in terms of both passengers being brought (16.8 million in 2016) and the number of departures (181,488 in 2016). United operates a maintenance base in Cleveland and Orlando.

Histori
United traces its roots to Varney Air Lines (VAL), founded Walter Varney in 1926 in Boise, Idaho. Continental Airlines is the successor to Speed ââLanes, which Varney had founded in 1932 and whose name changed to Varney Speed ââLines in 1934. VAL flew the first private airmail flight in the US on the 6th April 1926.
In 1927, William Boeing founded Boeing Air Transport to operate an air mail route under contract with the US Post Office Department. In 1929, Boeing merged its company with Pratt & amp; Whitney formed United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UATC) which then began buying, within just 28 months, Pacific Air Transport, Stout Air Services, VAL, and National Air Transport, as well as many equipment manufacturers at the same time. time. On March 28, 1931, UATC formed United Air Lines, Inc. as the parent company for its airline subsidiary.
In 1933, United began operating the Boeing 247 aircraft. It was capable of flying across the continental route within 20 hours, making it approximately 50 percent faster than its predecessor and reducing flight times by 33 percent. Following the release of the Air Mail Act in 1934, which banned the general ownership of aircraft manufacturers and airlines, the UATC was damaged. All manufacturing interests east of Mississippi became United Aircraft (United Technologies of the future), while all manufacturing interests in western Mississippi became a revived Boeing Aircraft Company. The interests of UATC airlines are folded into a single airline, United Air Lines.
After World War II, United gained from an explosion in customer demand for air travel, with revenue per passenger-mile jumping five-fold in the 1950s, and sustained growth occurred over the next two decades. From 1953 to 1970 United offered "special men" flights that prohibit children and women (with the exception of two female flight attendants per flight). Passengers are allowed to smoke and are offered free cigars and drinks, and steak dinners.
In 1954, United Airlines became the first airline to purchase flight simulators that had visual, sound, and motion cues for pilot training. Purchased for US $ 3 million (1954) from Curtiss-Wright, this is the first of the current modern flight simulators for pilot training of commercial passenger aircraft.
United joined Capital Airlines in 1961, which helped United regain its position as the "number one airline" in the US. In 1968, United Airlines became a subsidiary of UAL Corporation. The Union experienced several periods of labor unrest during the 1970s, and the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act forced United to lower its operations to remain profitable.
In 1982, United became the first airline to operate Boeing 767, taking delivery of 767-200 on August 19. In May 1985, the airline suffered a 29-day strike on the proposed "B-scale" pilot rate.
In 1985, United expanded dramatically by purchasing the entire Pacific Division of Pan Am, giving it the premier Asian hub at Tokyo's Narita International Airport, and in 1991 purchased a route to Heathrow Airport from a sick Pan Am. making it one of two US operators allowed exclusive access to Heathrow under Bermuda II until the "open sky" came into force in 2008 (American Airlines was the other, after which purchased the Heathrow TWA landing slot). After the Gulf War and increased competition from low-cost airlines caused losses in 1991 and 1992. In 1994, pilots, engineers, baggage holders, and non-contract employees United agreed with the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), earned 55 percent share of the company in exchange for 15-25 percent salary concessions. This makes the airline the world's largest employee-owned company. United also launched a low-cost Shuttle subsidiary by United in 1994, which is a high-frequency, west coast-based operator that remained in operation until 2001.
In 1995, United became the first airline to introduce Boeing 777 in commercial services. In 1997, United established a Star Alliance airline partnership. In May 2000, United announced plans to acquire US Airways of US $ 11.6 billion, but withdrew its offer in July 2001 before the US Justice Department banned mergers for antitrust reasons because of the widespread denial of unions, customers and political leaders. May 2000 also sees a contract dispute between United and its pilot union on payroll cuts and concessions to fund the ESOP and overtime work, causing the cancellation of summer flights until a salary increase is approved.
During the September 11, 2001 attacks, two of the four planes hijacked and crashed by al-Qaeda members were United aircraft. United Airlines Flight 175 was flown to the tower of the World Trade Center south. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back behind the hijackers. The decline in the aviation industry is the result. Economic troubles, soaring oil prices, and higher labor costs led United to lose $ 2.14 billion in 2001. That same year United filed for a $ 1.5 billion loan guarantee from the Stabilization Agency Federal air transport established behind the September 11 attacks. United filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 9, 2002. United then embezzled thousands of workers, closed the US city ticket office, canceled some existing and planned routes, reduced operations in Miami, and closed several maintenance bases. The Company also negotiates termination of employment with employees, suppliers and contractors. Contract termination agreement with United Express carriers Atlantic Coast Airlines and Air Wisconsin. In 2005, United canceled its retirement package in the largest form of default in US corporate history. On September 7, 2005, United announced that it had raised US $ 3 billion in financing to get out of bankruptcy and submit a Reorganization Plan. United emerged from bankruptcy on February 1, 2006.
In 2004, United launched a low-cost airline called Ted and premium p.s. coast-to-coast service on a reconfigured Boeing 757 aircraft. On June 4, 2008, United announced the closure of the Ted unit and reconfigured the subsidiary's plane to return to its primary configuration.
At the end of 2006, Continental Airlines and United held an initial merger discussion. On April 16, 2010, the discussion continued. The board of directors of Continental and UAL Corporation agreed on May 2, 2010, to combine operations, depending on shareholders and regulatory approvals. While United will be a living airline, the combined airline will adopt the Continental logo and livery. Chief Executive Officer Continental (CEO) Jeff Smisek will lead the new company. The merger was approved by the European Commission in July 2010 and by the US Department of Justice on August 27, 2010. On September 17, 2010, United's shareholders approved the merger. On October 1, 2010, UAL Company changed its name to United Continental Holdings, Inc. The operators plan to begin incorporating their operations in 2011. The combined airline commenced operations under a single air carrier certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration on November 30, 2011. On March 3, 2012, United and Continental incorporated a passenger service system, a frequent-flier program , and their website, which virtually eliminates the Continental brand with the exception of logos.
In October 2015, United appointed Brett J. Hart as acting CEO, four days after CEO Oscar Munoz suffered a heart attack.

Corporate identity
Original brand image
The pre-merged British logo, commonly nicknamed "tulips", was developed in the early 1970s after the airline commissioned designer Saul Bass to develop a brand new image. The logo represents the airline's monogram as well as the modern version of the airline shield logo that had been adopted in the 1930s, but was not used in the late 1960s. Such as ribbon rendering is also said to symbolize flight movement.
The marketing theme
United's initial slogan, "The Main Line Airway", emphasizes the sign of the New York-Chicago-San Francisco route, and was replaced in 1965 with "Fly the Friendly Skies". The tagline "friendly sky" was used until 1996 in its first iteration. The "It's time to fly" slogan was created in 2004. After the merger of United and Continental in October 2010, the slogan changed to "Let's fly together" until September 2013. On September 20, 2013, United announced the return of "Fly slogan in advertising campaign Friendly to start the next day The slogan will be accompanied by George Gershwin 1924's "Rhapsody in Blue" as the theme song, and the voiceover provided by Matt Damon.
Unified licensed theme song, "Rhapsody in Blue", from Gershwin real for US $ 500,000 (equivalent to $ 2,150,292 in 2017) in 1976. "Rhapsody" will enter the public domain in 2000, but Sonny The Bono Copyright Renewal Rights Act of 1998 extends its copyright in 20 years. United announced that they will continue to use "Rhapsody in Blue" as the theme song after the merger with Continental.

Company affairs
Headquarters
In 2007, United moved its headquarters and 350 top executives from Elk Grove Township, a Chicago suburb, to 77 West Wacker Drive in the Chicago Loop after receiving a $ 5.5 million incentive in Chicago City. The Elk Grove campus became the center of operations after several United offices in the Chicago suburbs were consolidated there.
In 2010, United received a $ 35 million Chicago-City offer in incentives, including a $ 10 million grant, for United to move its remaining 2,500 employees from Elk Grove Township to Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) at the Chicago Loop. On May 31, 2012, United opened its center of operations, which occupies twelve floors of the Willis Tower.
Other facilities
The former Elk Grove Township campus campus is gradually annexed to the Village of Mount Prospect, and serves as an IT operations facility, with a 172,000 square foot (16,000 m 2 ) data center built in 2013. United retain attendance large in downtown Houston, after hiring 225,000 sqÃ, ft (20,900m 2 ) space (seven floors) for occupancy by the end of 2017.
United has training facilities for its flight crew in Denver and Houston, San Francisco's major aircraft maintenance centers, and call centers in Houston and Chicago.
United previously had the Waikiki Seaside Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii used by flight crews until it was sold in February 2012.
Environmental efforts
Because more than 98 percent of United Nations greenhouse gas emissions come from jet fuel, its environmental strategy focuses on operational fuel efficiency initiatives and investments in sustainable, low-carbon alternative fuels.
On August 23, 2011, United Continental Holdings, Inc. announced the conversion to a paperless flight deck, and projected that by the end of this year 11,000 iPads will be deployed to all United and Continental pilots. Each iPad, which weighs less than 1.5 pounds (0.68 kg), will replace about 38 pounds (17 kg) of paper operating manuals, navigation charts, reference books, flight checklists, notebooks and weather information. Green benefits include reduced paper use, printing, and fuel consumption.
On November 7, 2011, United flew the world's first commercial aviation flight on biofuel derived from microbes. The plane was triggered by Solajet 40 percent, which is a renewable jet fuel derived from Solazyme algae, and 60 percent of jet fuel derived from petroleum. The flight is operated by the Boeing 737-800 Eco-Skies aircraft from Houston to Chicago-O'Hare.
On January 15, 2013, Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), a joint venture between Aviation Partners Inc. and Boeing, announced that United had agreed to replace Blended Winglets on Boeing Next Generation 737 aircraft with Scabitar Winglet (SSW) APB, significantly reducing the obstacles. Once SSW is installed, it is estimated that APB's winglet technology will save United over $ 250 million annually in fuel costs.
On June 30, 2015, United invested US $ 30 million in Fulcrum BioEnergy, an alternative fuel company. The Fulcrum alternative fuel is produced through clean and efficient thermochemical processes and reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by more than 80 percent. As part of its investment, United will work with Fulcrum to develop up to five alternative fuel plants near its US hub. The refinery will produce up to 180 million gallons of sustainable alternative aviation fuel per year, and United will have the opportunity to purchase at least 90 million gallons per year for a minimum of 10 years, making it the largest alternative aviation fuel commitment to date.
On March 11, 2016, United became the first airline in the world to fly the commercial scale of fuel continuously, obtained from AltAir Fuels. These fuels are produced from sustainable feedstocks such as non-edible natural oils and agricultural wastes, and are expected to deliver carbon dioxide emissions of more than 60 percent on a lifetime basis when compared to traditional jet fuel. United has agreed to purchase up to 15 million gallons of sustainable alternative fuels from AltAir Fuels for use in Los Angeles over a three-year period.
In 2016, United began to partner with Clean the World to reuse goods from premium-class comfort equipment of international airlines and donate hygiene products to those in great need. Clean the World provides hygiene and soap education to promote hand washing, which helps prevent hygiene-related deaths. During the first year of this partnership, United are expected to divert 60,000 pounds (27,200 material) that should be disposed of in landfills.
In 2017 United initiated a partnership with Audubon International to protect birds of prey - including eagles, osprey and owls - inside and around New York airport airports and resettle predatory birds in appropriate golf course habitats where species are more likely to flourish.
Labor
All United Airlines pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement has been ratified by a majority of United/Continental pilots on December 15, 2012, which crashed into a clause prohibiting Continental from regional jet flying outsourcing with 70 or more passenger seats.
Animal transport
In 2013, following pressure from PETA, United announced that it would no longer transport monkeys to the laboratory. United is the last North American passenger carrier to transport these animals to the laboratory. United flies more animals and has longer flight stages than any other US carrier, and accounts for one-third of the deaths of US airline animals between 2012 and 2017.
Effective March 20, 2018, the PetSafe program is suspended without new orders for cargo transport of accepted pets. This was after United announced plans to tag carrier operators in passenger cabins with bright labels and laws introduced in the United States and United States Senate Representatives Council which prohibited the placement of pets in the compartment above. This was in response to the death of the dog after the passenger placed it in the compartment above following the flight attendant's instructions, but the flight attendant denied knowing that the luggage contained a dog.
Cyber ââSecurity â ⬠<â ⬠<
Americans provide airline miles as a "gift bug" for hackers who can identify loopholes in the web operator's security. Two hackers each were rewarded with 1 million miles of air travel on July 15, 2015. This cyber security program was announced a few weeks before the company experienced two software interruptions. The first incident delayed 150 United flights on June 2 because of problems with its flight delivery system. Six days later, United's reservation system delayed flights by not allowing passengers to check in. In addition to the "bug bounty" program, United said it will test the system internally and involve cyber security companies.

With over 300 weekly flights to the regional ski city airport, United has three nearby competitor ski services, Delta.
United asked for a slot exchange in New York-JFK and New York-Newark (EWR) by providing Delta 24 JFK slots in return for 24 EWR Delta slots. This is a direct result of the pxc step of the American continent. flight from JFK to EWR around the same time. However, this will strengthen United's monopoly on the EWR beyond the current 73%, and face close scrutiny. In November 2015, the US DOJ sued UAL and AMD to block the exchange of slots.
In October 2016, United codeshared with the following airlines:
Longest non-stop flight

Fleet
In May 2018, the United fleet consisted of the following aircraft:
On July 20, 2011, American Airlines announced orders for 460 narrowbody jets, including 260 Airbus A320s. The order broke Boeing's monopoly with the airline and forced Boeing into a 737 MAX re-engine. This sale includes the Most Preferred Customer Clause, which requires Airbus to return the money to America of any difference between the price paid by the United States and the lower price paid by United or other airlines. This perpetuates United has a Boeing-skewed fleet.
On September 22, 2012, United became the first American airline to take delivery of Boeing 787 aircraft. United is also a North American launch customer for Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft, which is a stretch version of the 787-8 base model.
