The Subaru FB engine is the third-generation and currently 4-boxer gasoline engine used in Subaru cars, and announced on September 23, 2010. It follows the previous generation EJ-series engine introduced in 1989 and generations The first EA-series was introduced in 1966. By increasing the piston stroke and reducing the piston hole, Subaru aims to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, while increasing and expanding the torque output compared to the EJ series.

FB has all new block and heads featuring dual overhead cams with intake and variable valve timing exhaust (which Subaru designates as AVCS, stands for Active Valve Control System), and timing chain that replaces the timing belt. Moving to chain-driven cams is said to allow the valves to be placed at a much narrower angle to each other and shrink the cylinder holes from 99.5 mm to 94. The result is unburned fuel during early cold, thus reducing emissions. Subaru is able to maintain its exterior dimensions substantially unchanged by using an asymmetric linking rod as in the EZ36 engine. FB is only slightly heavier than an EJ equivalent-displacement. In January 2011, Car and Driver were notified of direct injection will be added immediately.
Subaru claims a 28 percent reduction in friction losses, mainly due to lighter pistons and connecting rods. The compact oil pump is also credited with the contribution of friction reduction losses. FB has a 10% increase in fuel economy with its coming power faster and torsion bands becoming more widespread.
The compression ratio is slightly higher, and stroke has increased compared to the EJ engine; previously, the casing was blocking longer strokes. This change improves the combustion efficiency and allows higher torque at lower speeds. The FB was built at Gunma Oizumi Plant and was initially available as a 2.5-liter displacement engine, starting with the Forester model, with a 2.0-liter model to follow the Imprezas. 0W-20 oil is used to help fuel economy, and about 1 liter more oil is used as newly adopted time chains require oil supply.
