REGISTRAR-LOCK is a status code that can be set on an Internet domain name by a registrar that sponsors a domain name. This is usually done to prevent unauthorized, unwanted or unintentional changes to the domain name.

When set up, the following actions are prohibited by domain name registration:

  • Modifications of the domain name, including:
    • Transfer from the domain name
    • Removal of the domain name
  • Modify domain contact details

Domain name updates, however, are still possible when REGISTRAR-LOCK is set.

Not all Top Level domains (TLD) support REGISTRAR-LOCK, e.g..org.uk, and more.

The.ca TLD added support for REGISTRAR-LOCK in October 2010.

RFC, 2832, section 6, and RFC 3632, section 2.1, lists of different status codes and their descriptions.
