Histori

Overland Park traces its roots to 1905, with the arrival of its founder, William B. Strang Jr. who began planning subdivisions along the old military road, which later became the city's main road. Strang developed most of what later became downtown Overland Park.

On May 20, 1960 Overland Park was officially included as a "first-class city", with a population of 28,085. As in the case of hundreds of other suburban cities across the United States, the next decade was very successful. Less than thirty years later, the population nearly quadrupled to 111,790 in 1990. Although somewhat slow, this growth rate continued almost three decades later, rising to 173,250 at the 2010 census. Overland Park officially became the second largest city in the state , following Wichita, Kansas, after passing through Kansas City, Kansas in the early 2000s.

The success of Overland Park did not come without controversy. Population growth in the city can mainly be attributed to traditional greenfield suburban development. This pattern can be recorded by looking at the map of city annexation. Overland Park's final annexation effort in 2008, gathered extensive news coverage after massive protests from affected populations. In total over 8 square miles (21 km 2 ), though half of the 15 square miles (39 km 2 ) the city originally requested, was added to the city. Overland Park now has a combined land area of 75.37 square miles (195.21 km 2 ) and stretches across most of North-South Johnson County. Although the Overland Park protests have led state lawmakers to take the lead in changing the state laws governing annexation to require the majority vote of affected residents in all future annexations of more than 40 acres (0.16 km 2 ).
