First-generation BB is based on the Toyota Vitz. While the box-shaped mini MPV was originally targeted to Japanese men in their twenties, it was also popular with female buyers, and also at least personally imported into the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Bb production occurred between January 2000 and April 2005 at Takaoka factory in Toyota, Aichi. Production occurred in the former Central Motors between August 2004 and December 2005 for bB; Scion xB model exports continued through December 2006.
Machine
Engine options include a 1.3 and 1.5 liter four-line engine.
Marketing
In the United States, the first-generation bB was sold under the Scion brand as "xB" from June 2003 to 2007.
For Scion xB, the front passenger area also changes significantly with the front bb seats being replaced with bucket seats and the shifter mounted on the columns is converted into shifter mounted on the floor.

In the Top Ten series of Gear, Jeremy Clarkson jokingly compares Materia with Ascari A10, saying, "Of course Daihatsu Materia is a good car... but balanced... I would choose a big, yellow, shouted car instead."

The vehicle was built at Chief Factory (Ikeda), Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.
Daihatsu Materia sales end in Japan in January 2013.
