The SDI engine is a direct natural aspart diesel injection (NA) diesel design developed and manufactured by Volkswagen Group for use in cars and vans, along with marine engines (Volkswagen Marine) and Volkswagen Industrial Motor applications.

The brand name SDI (derived from "Suction Diesel Injection" or "Suction Diesel Direct Injection", the latter is a German translation: Saugdiesel Direkt Einspritzung ) was adopted to distinguish between earlier and less efficient indirect injection machines, called SD or "Suction Diesel", also produced by the Volkswagen Group.

The SDI machine is only produced in inline or straight engine configuration; and since they are from German manufacturing, designated as R4 or R5, taken from German: Reihenmotor . They are available in various displacements (1.7-2.5 liters), inline-four (R4 or I4) and inline-five (R5 or I5), in various aligned conditions, depending on the intended application.

The SDI machine is commonly used in applications where reliability and fuel economy are a major concern. These machines have no forced induction type, hence the use of 'siphoning' in the title, and thus, their power output is lower when compared to similar turbocharged displacement engines. For example, the 2.0 SDI engine mounted on Volkswagen Golf Mk5 has a peak power output of 55 kilowatts (75 PS; 74 bhp); while the same engine in the form of Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) rated 103 kilowatts (140 PS, 138 bpd) or 125 kilowatts (170 PS, 168 bhp), depending on specification.

Note: The Volkswagen Marine engine was originally rated under Directive 80/1269/EEC. However, some are now being assessed to ISO 8178-4.

Lubricant

Like their Volkswagen Group Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine, Volkswagen AG requires motor oil lubricants for SDI machines to meet only approved VW505.00, 505.01, 506.00, 506.01 or 507.00 approved standards. Generic oil standards such as the American Petroleum Institute 'API', or the European Car Manufacturers Association 'ACEA' are not recognized, or approved by VW - so oil containing this generic approval should not be used unless it has been used. given one particular VW agreement.

Many motor oil formulations of most brands are now "VW Approved" for the above standards. However, there are some unapproved 'brands' that print VW numbers on labels, effectively 'claim' to meet those standards, but hide in the small "recommended" type. Volkswagen AG only conducts in-house testing of motor oil to provide the necessary approvals; if Volkswagen AG, therefore, does not perform such testing (or if the proposed oil fails in their tests), Volkswagen AG will not give consent. Volkswagen Germany (and Volkswagen of America) freely publish the latest list of approved oil currently on their respective websites, along with technical resources, erWin. Volkswagen AG does not allow independent testing facilities to provide their own VW standards.

All SDI-engined models with "LongLife Services", "Advanced Service Intervals", "ESI", or "WIV", must be run with the official 'LongLife' lubricant, ie VW506.00 (for non -PD ), VW506.01 (for PD), or the latest VW507.00. Again, other generic 'longlife' lubricants (or longlife standards provided by other manufacturers such as General Motors, BMW or Mercedes-Benz) may not be used unless they also have the relevant relevant VW LongLife approval.

SDI vs other VW Group diesel engines

The following table lists the current Volkswagen Group options and the compression history of an SDI diesel engine for performance comparisons and operating characteristics with other aspirated and compulsory induction machines of equal capacity:
