The Honda Insight is a hybrid electric vehicle manufactured and marketed by Honda in its first generation as a three-door hatchback, two passengers (1999-2006) and in its second generation as a five-door, five-hatchback passenger (2009-2014 ). Honda introduced the second generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. Insight is the cheapest hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a cheaper basic model for the 2011 model year. Insight launched April 2009 in the UK as the lowest-priced hybrid on the market and became the best-selling hybrid for a month.

The Insight ranked as the best-selling vehicle in Japan for April 2009, the first for hybrid models. During the first twelve months after it was first available in the Japanese market, the second generation Insight sold 143,015 units worldwide. In July 2014 Honda announced the end of Insight production for the 2015 model, along with hydrogen fuel cell car Honda FCX Clarity and electric car Honda Fit EV.

First First generation (1999-2006)

History

Based on the Honda J-VX concept car that was launched at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, Insight was introduced in Japan in November 1999 as the first production vehicle featuring Honda's Integrated Motor Assist system. In the following months, December 1999, Insight became the first hybrid available in North America, followed seven months later by the Toyota Prius.

Insight features optimized aerodynamics and lightweight aluminum structures to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions. In 2014, the first generation of Insight is still ranked as the EPA's most fuel efficient gasoline-fueled vehicle, with a highway rating of 61 miles per gallon US (3.9 L/100 km; 73 mpg -imp ) and a combined city/highway rank 53 miles per gallon US (4.4 L/100 km; 64 mpg -imp ).

Design

Honda Insight is a 3.945 mm (155.3 inch) subcompact hatchback with a 2.400 mm (94.5 inch) wheelbase, 1.355 mm (53.3 inches) high and 1,695 mm (66.7 inches) wide. in). First generation insights are only produced as two seats. The model was launched with just one trim level: a manual transmission with optional air conditioning. Technology

Intelligent Power Units, Power Control Units, Electronic Control Units, vehicle batteries, dc-to-dc converters and high voltage inverters are all located under the vehicle's cargo floor, behind the seat.

Honda increased vehicle fuel efficiency using aluminum and plastic extensively to reduce vehicle weight. Its basic structure is the new lightweight aluminum monocoque, which is reinforced in the main area with aluminum extrusions incorporated in cast aluminum lugs. Stamped aluminum panels are welded into this structure to form a very lightweight and rigid platform for drivetrain and suspension. Insight weighs less than half of the contemporary 3-door Civic, with 38% torsional rigidity and 13% bending rigidity. Honda built Insight with aluminum front brake calipers and rear brake drums, and with most aluminum suspensions, in addition to standard aluminum wheels; reducing the ratio of un-sprung to sprung weight and also total weight. With its aluminum body and frame, Insight is an expensive car to produce and never designed for high-volume sales. The Insight has facelifted in 2010 in the UK and in 2011 for the 2012 model year in the United States, with updates on suspension, styling and interior. The reason we chose the five-door hatchback is that we want cars to be popular in Europe. Powertrain

IMA battery

IMA Insight is powered by a flat metal nickel metal hydride package located under the cargo floor between the rear wheels. The 84 module battery is manufactured by Sanyo Electric and delivers a nominal system voltage of 100.8 volts with a nominal 5.75 ampere-hour capacity. The module's power density is 30 percent larger than the second generation Civic Hybrid. The battery is recharged automatically by scavenging engine power, when necessary, and with regenerative braking as the car slows down. Electronic power management, battery modules, and cooling systems are all in the IMA battery pack.

Honda ECO ASSIST System

The system monitors and displays the positive or negative effects of the driving force on the fuel economy of the vehicle.

As a visual aid, Insight's digital speedometer background glows green as the car is being driven in an efficient manner. Less efficient driving makes the meter glow greenish. Chassis, suspension and steering

This Insight compact chassis comes from the components used in the Honda Fit. The engine compartment structure and the front of the chassis are almost identical to the Fit, but with additional extras to aid accident protection. From the firewall, platform platform is unique to Insight.

To control costs, Honda decided not to include the AC compressor used in the Civic Hybrid. The Civic Hybrid power grid enables the AC compressor to continue running (using battery power) to keep the cabin temperature when the engine is turned off in Furnace Stops mode. Instead, Insights limit the duration of Stop Stop mode when using AC and restart the engine, if necessary, to maintain the cabin temperature. Fuel efficiency

Despite technological advances, Insight's second-generation fuel efficiency is lower than the first because of significant increases in size, weight and strength. Japanese

New insights started sales in Japan on February 6, 2009. Reception in Japan exceeded Honda's preliminary estimates of 5,000 monthly sales. This resulted in a lack of availability for overseas markets and Honda had to start production on the second line at Suzuka factory in mid-June to increase production from 700 units per day. In April 2009, Honda Insight became the first gasoline-electric hybrid to become the best-selling vehicle in Japan for a month. After less than eleven months of sales, Honda sold 93,283 Insights in Japan in 2009, ranking it as the fifth best-selling car of the year. In March 2010, Honda announced that the new Insight managed to penetrate 100,000 sales in the Japanese market in just one year after its introduction.

United States

The car went on sale on March 24, 2009, in the US as a 2010 model, making it the cheapest hybrid vehicle available in the United States.

In less than ten months since its introduction, total Insight sales for 2009 in the US market was 20,572 units, selling more than Fusion Hybrid (15,554 units) and Civic Hybrid (15,119), but behind the Camry Hybrid (22,887 units) and Toyota Prius (139,682 units). Sales in the US came under expectations, mainly because of the economic recession in 2008-09, fierce competition and a fall in gasoline prices by more than a third over the past year, eroding demand for fuel-efficient cars.

In December 2010, Honda introduced the cheaper Insight hybrid for the 2011 model year to help boost sales. For the 2011 LX model, the central armrest, cruise control, USB connectivity for new audio and mat systems are added. Electronic stability control and brake support are standard on all trim levels. All models are equipped with automatic climate control. Honda explained the move "to make (the vehicle) more affordable for young customers who previously could not be a hybrid." In 2009, Toyota promised the Prius at a lower price to compete with Insight, but quietly dropped the deal for consumers.

In 2010, 20,962 Insights were sold in that country. The Insight ranked second in all hybrid vehicle sales after the Toyota Prius, beating the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Ford Fusion Hybrid. Honda Insight has been sold from April 4, 2009 and preliminary reports say that it will beat its competitors by 15%. The Insight is no longer excluded from congestion charges in London. Australia

Reception

Initial reviews praised Insight's futuristic styling, handling, and pricing but noted that it was less powerful, less fuel efficient, and less comfortable than other more expensive hybrids.
