Company history

BC Forbes, a financial columnist for Hearst's paper, and colleague Walter Drey, general manager of Magazine of Wall Street, founded the Forbes magazine on September 15, 1917. Forbes provided money and names and Drey provides publishing skills. The original name of the magazine is Forbes: Serving on Doers and Doings . Drey became vice president of B.C. Forbes Publishing Company, while B.C. Forbes became editor in chief, a post he held until his death in 1954. B.C. Forbes was assisted in his later years by his two eldest sons, Bruce Charles Forbes (1916-1964) and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes (1917-1990).

Bruce Forbes took over his father's death, and his strength lies in streamlining operations and developing marketing. During his tenure, 1954-1964, the magazine's circulation nearly doubled.

At the death of Malcolm, his eldest son Malcolm Stevenson "Steve" Forbes Jr. (b. 1947) became President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes and Chief Editor of Forbes magazine. Between 1961 and 1999 the magazine was edited by James Michaels. In 1993, under Michaels, was a finalist for the National Magazine Award. In 2006, an investment group of Elevation Partners that includes rock star Bono bought minority interests in the company with reorganization, through a new company, Forbes Media LLC, where Forbes Magazine and Forbes.com, along with other media properties, are now part. The 2009 report New York Times says: "40 percent of companies sold... for $ 300 million reported, setting corporate value at $ 750 million". Three years later, Mark M. Edmiston of AdMedia Partners observed, "It may not be worth half of it now". Then it was revealed that the price was US $ 264 million.

Sales headquarters and relocation to Jersey City

In January 2010, reached an agreement to sell its headquarters building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan to New York University; the terms of the deal are not publicly reported, but Forbes will continue to occupy space under the sale-leaseback arrangements. The company headquarters then moved to the Newport section of downtown Jersey City, New Jersey in 2014.

Sales to Integrated Whale Media (51% stake)

In November 2013, Forbes Media, which publishes the Forbes magazine, is set up for sale. This is driven by minority shareholder Elevation Partners. The sales document prepared by Deutsche Bank revealed that the issuer's EBITDA 2012 is US $ 15 million. Forbes is reportedly looking for a price of US $ 400 million. In July 2014, the Forbes family bought Elevation and then sold a 51% majority stake in the company to Integrated Whale Media Investments.

Forbes.com is part of Forbes Digital, a division of Forbes Media LLC. Forbes ownership covers part of RealClearPolitics. Together these sites reach over 27 million unique visitors each month. Forbes.com used the slogan "Home Page for World Business Leaders" and claimed, in 2006, became the most visited business website in the world. The 2009 Report Times says that, while "one of the top five financial sites by traffic [throws] from about $ 70 million to $ 80 million per year in revenue, it never produces hope. - for public offerings ".

Forbes.com uses a "contributor model" where a broad network of "contributors" writes and publishes articles directly on websites. Contributors are paid on the basis of traffic to their Forbes.com page; the site has received contributions from over 2,500 individuals, and some contributors have earned over US $ 100,000, according to the company. Forbes currently allows advertisers to publish blog posts on their websites alongside regular editorial content through a program called BrandVoice, which accounts for more than 10 percent of its digital revenue. Forbes.com also publishes subscription investment bulletins, and an online guide to the website, Best of the Web .

David Churbuck founded the ' website in 1996. The site discovered the scam of a journalist Stephen Glass at The New Republic in 1998, an article that draws attention to Internet journalism. At the height of media coverage of Toyota's unexpectedly unexpected acceleration unexpectedly in 2010, it exposes California "Prius runaway" as a hoax, as well as running five other articles by Michael Fumento challenging the entire premise of Toyota's car media to be bad. Sites, such as magazines, publish many lists that focus on billionaires and their possessions, especially expensive homes, an important aspect of website popularity.

Currently, the website also blocks Internet users using ad blocking software (such as Adblock Plus) from accessing articles, demanding that the website be whitelisted in ad blocking software before access is granted. Forbes believes that this is done because customers who use ad blocking software do not contribute to site revenue. Malware attacks have been recorded from the Forbes site.
