The BMW 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93) is the fifth generation compact executive car of the BMW 3 Series, produced from 2004 to 2013. Body style ranges are:
- Sedan/Sedan 4 Door (Model Code E90)
- Estate/Wagon (Model Code E91, marketed as "Tour")
- CoupÃÆ' à © (Model Code E92)
- Cabriolet (Model Code E93)
Due to a separate model code for each body style, the term "E9X" is sometimes used to describe the 3rd generation of this Series.
Sedans and wagons E90/E91 begin to be removed after the introduction of their F30/F31 successor in 2012. However, E92/E93 coupe and cabriolet remain manufactured until 2013, when they were replaced by the F32/F33 model.
E92 335i coupe, introduced in 2006, is the first 3 Series models sold with turbocharged gasoline engines. The E9X family also saw the introduction of run-flat tires to the 3 Series range. As a result, cars with run-flats are not equipped with spare tires.
The M3 E90/E92/E93 is the only M3 generation powered by a V8 engine. Released in 2007, it uses the BMW S65 engine and is manufactured in body style sedans, coupes and cabriolet.

Sedan (E90)
The sedan model is the first model sold from the 5th generation BMW 3 series, which was launched on March 5, 2005 (as a model of 2006) with models of 318i, 320i, 320si, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi. In the next few years, the following sedan models are added: 316i, 320d, 325d, 328i, 330d, 335i, 335xi, 335d and M3.
Optional features (some of which are standard on higher models) include Xenon headlamps, fog lamps, automatic climate control, adjustable power seats, satellite navigation, premium audio, Dakota leather seats, glass sunroof, heated front seats, Bluetooth and USB audio input. In 2011, BMW 323i Luxury Edition was released, including an automatic transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric front seats, Bluetooth and USB compatibility, and electric glass sunroof.
This will be the last 3 Series to offer natural aspirated engines with N52B30 (used on 328i) and S65B40 (used in M3).
Tour (E91)
The E91 cart style body is known as the 3 Series Touring or Sports Wagon. Optional equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, which extends to the rear passenger area.
Trim levels are usually similar to the E90 sedan, but there is no M3 variant of the E91. As per E90, powertrains use a variety of petrol and diesel engines I-6 and I-4, paired with RWD and/or xDrive AWD. Markets like the United States and Canada, however, offer but a fraction of their already limited E90 trim. In these two markets, only 325xi with AWD are available before 2007, and only 328i in RWD and xDrive AWD are offered from 2007 onwards.
CoupÃÆ'à © (E92)
Body Style coupe 5th generation coupe Series 3 became available in August 2006 (as a model year 2007), one year after the saloon. E92 is available in 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325i, 338i, 335i, 330i, 330i, 330i, 330i, 330i, 330xd, 335d, 335d, 330d, 330xd, 335d, M3 and M3. This will be the last model to include the coupe and convertible as part of the 3 Series; for the sixth generation (F32/F33/F36) and so on, this body style was changed to be marketed as a Series 4.
The Coupe has significant differences with the sedan, compared to the previous generation. The differences include the tail-light design (L-shaped on the coupe), the steeper headlights and the smaller side windows. The coupe door panel is also longer, the two passenger seats in the back instead of the three-person bench, and also includes the center rear console tray.
Coupà © also has a borderless door like its predecessor E46. There is also a pullable arm that extends from the B-pillar to hand the seat belt to the driver and/or passenger when the primary key is in the ignition and the door is closed.
Cabriolet (E93)
The 3 Series Cabriolet is the first model in the BMW lineup with a hard 3-part hard aluminum roof instead of the cloth roof used by the previous model. E93 is one of the first retractable hardtop in its price range. Other manufacturers have since produced similarly retractable hardtop convertibles, such as the Lexus IS C and the Infiniti G37 convertible. The "Convenient Access" option allows the roof to be raised and lowered using the fob button.
Overall visibility rose 38 percent, thanks to a 30 percent larger side window, compared to the E46 Series 3 Cabriolet.
The BMW 3 Series converter is often priced higher than its direct competitors, but reviewers praise its passenger space (even with the roof down), driving the dynamics, weight and chassis rigidity.
Suspension
At the front, aluminum MacPherson struts are used. The rear suspension is a 5-link steel multi-link suspension.
Tools
Options can be ordered individually (such as Xenon headlamps and audio enhancements) or incorporated into the package. Optional interior color, known as the BMW Individual, is also available at an additional cost.
Premium Package Contents vary according to year and market model. This includes items such as leather seats with power adjustments, memory seat functions, lumbar support, auto-dimming mirrors, digital compasses, automatic folding exterior mirrors, bluetooth and universal garage openers.
Cold Weather Package includes front lamp washers, heated front seats and separate/folding rear seats.
The Sports package includes a sport 3-prong steering wheel, sports front seats, 18-inch wheels, sports suspension and increased speed limiters up to 148 mph (238 km/h).
The Technology package includes iDrive, navigation, keyless entry, selectable drive mode ("M Drive"), HD radio, and Damping Electronic Regulator.

Special Edition
320si (2005-2006)
To meet the homologation requirements for the FIA's World Touring Car Championships (WTCC), BMW builds 2600 320si units.
BMW WTCC working driver Andy Priaulx won two of three consecutive World Championships on the E90 320si as well as four other drivers achieving more than 35 wins in the championship since the cars were released. BMW 320si is used by several teams in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Colin Turkington won the BTCC Drivers 2009 championship using the BMW 320si.
335is (2011-2013)
335 is produced in coupÃÆ'à © and convertible models for the North American market. It sits between the usual 335i and M3 in the model line-up, and about 6,300 units are produced. 335 is using a higher performance version (N54T) of the N54 engine from 2006-2013 335i, which increases the boost from 8.7 to 11.6 PSI. It produces 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, plus the overboost function increases torque up to 370 lb-ft to 7 seconds.
The 335 series has a rigid engine mount and an improved cooling system, with a heavy duty radiator fan and two heat exchangers, one cooling engine oil, another a secondary cooling radiator. To accommodate this heat exchanger, located in front of each front wheel, 335 has a larger air opening, similar to M3. The fog lights are removed from the coupÃÆ' à © version to allow for openings, although they remain on the conversion version. In addition, the 335 is equipped with a revised high-flow disposal system, with twin tail pipes finished in matte black, and a rear bumper that incorporates a diffuser-style section.
The transmission option is a 7-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) with launch control (same DCT transmission with M3 but with different software programming) or 6-speed manual transmission controlled by short-range "M" stick. Manual transmission has heavy duty clutch with endurance over 335i regular.
Upgraded interiors include a thicker steering wheel, "M", "M" pedal steel, a standard sports chair, "M door frames", and textured aluminum trim with a "335" leap on the dash and in the instrument cluster. Exterior differences are black-colored kidney grills, and "Style 313" split-five spoke "M" wheels in 18-inch or 19-inch sizes, standard Shadowline (not chrome) window trim, gloss-black side mirrors (not body-colored mirrors ).
Model year changes
Facelift 2008 (LCI)
In September 2008, a facelift version (LCI) from Saloon and Estate was released for the 2009 model. Compared to the usually subtle changes in BMW LCI, this change is relatively broad.
Mechanical changes include an increase of 24 mm (0.94 inches) rear tracks for some models, increased power for 320d from 177 to 184 PS (135 kW; 181 bhp) and N57 engines replacing the M57 for the 330d model.
The styling changes include front and rear bumpers, wing mirrors, headlights, taillights, boot covers, wider louvre gratings and folded lines that are fixed to the hood.
For the interior, the head stop is littered with damage added to the front seat, the optional "Professional" navigation system has been updated, iDrive has been updated and the screen resolution is improved.
2010
For the 2010 model year, Sport, Lifestyle, and Exclusive Edition were introduced for Saloon and Estate models. The 316d estate model is added, as is the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition saloon.
Mechanical changes include compliance with EU5 emission standards, UE6 emission compliance (optional) for 320d and 330d models, increased power for 318d, 320d, 325d and 330d models, N54 engines in 335i replaced by N55 engines, and additional features for BMW ConnectedDrive.
Fuel pump failure N54
Some E90/E91/E92/E93 models using the N54 engine have a high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) problem.
Security
The Euro NCAP noted poor pedestrian protection gave 4 points from 36, reported the 3 Series "very disappointing" in this measure.
IIHS
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Series 3 good overall "Good" ratings in both frontal and side collision impact tests. Series 3 received a "Good" mark in all six categories of frontal collision testing, and a "Good" sign in six of the nine categories in a side impact test. IIHS also awarded the 3 Series Top Safety Pick . Convertibility is rated "Marginal" in side effects, making the 3 Series can be converted to the lowest rated vehicle currently sold in its class in IIHS testing.
Production
In 2002, Norbert Reithofer and Head of Development Burkhard Goeschel initiated the initiative to halve the time it took to reach the full production of the next 3 Series generation from six months to three.
First marketed in March 2005, the car quickly became BMW Group's best-selling car worldwide, and by the end of the year 229,900 vehicles had been delivered.
The BMW E90 series is the best-selling luxury car in Canada and the United States. The E90 2006 marks 15 consecutive years that Series 3 is named Car and Driver 10Best.
