Area codes 410, 443, and 667 are the telephone area codes that serve the eastern states of Maryland, including metropolitan areas of Baltimore and the East Coast. The area code 410 is the main area code, while the 443 and 667 codes are overlaid codes. 443 and 667 are primarily used with CLEC mobile phones and carriers such as Comcast or Cavalier Telephone when introduced but have since become universal in the availability of their operators.

History
Before this area code was created, all Maryland had been serviced by 301 since the area code agency in 1947, even though the country is home to two very large metropolitan areas - Baltimore and Maryland suburbs Washington, DC (area code 202). This makes Maryland one of the most populous states to be served by a single area code. However, in the late 1980s, 301 was on the verge of exhaustion due to the rapid growth of fax machines and the periphery of Baltimore and Washington. Supply of available quantities is increasingly limited by the fact that most of the Maryland region in the Washington area shares LATA with northern Virginia and the District itself. For more than 40 years, it is possible to make calls between parts of Washington territory with just seven digits, since each number in 301 and north of Virginia 703 is numbered "hidden" in the area code of District 202.
Plans have been made to break this old scheme, but it soon becomes clear that this will not free up enough amounts to meet demand. It is now clear that a second area code is required. In November 1990, plans to add a second area code, code 410, to the country announced. It was decided that the Baltimore and Eastern Shore metropolitan areas would get a new area code, while western and southern Maryland - including the Washington suburbs - would remain with the 301 area code. Usually, when the area code is shared, the largest city in the old numbering plan area stores the original area code- in this case, Baltimore. However, most of the inhabitants of Maryland live on the outskirts of Washington. In addition, Bell Atlantic (now Verizon), the largest operator in the region, wants to salvage a large number of federal agents on the Washington side of Washington's metro charges and expenses due to having to change their numbers.
Area code 410 officially entered service on October 6, 1991; it was originally implemented in a permissive-call mode, not as flash-cut, with a 10-digit calling scheme coming in for local calls at the new 301/410 limit. The split mostly follows the metro line. However, parts of Anne Arundel, Carroll County, Frederick County, and Howard County are shared between area codes 301 and 410. Effective November 1, 1991, ten-digit calls are required when calling different area codes in Maryland.
Although the split is meant to be a long-term solution, within five years 410 is close to fatigue due to the region's rapid growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. To solve this problem, area code 443 was superimposed into 410 on 1 July 1997. Overlay is a new concept at the time, and has met some resistance because of the prospect of different area codes. in the same area as well as the requirements for ten-digit calls. Conventional wisdom will suggest a split in which Baltimore will save 410 while the Eastern Shore switch to 443. However, Bell Atlantic wants to keep the occupants from having to change their numbers for the second time in less than a decade.
In 2011, the 410/443 area once again ran out of numbers due to cell phone proliferation. To prevent residents from having to change their phone number to a new area code, overlays area code 667 have been implemented on March 24, 2012.
