An adult diaper (or adult diaper ) is a diaper made for use by a person with a larger body than a baby or toddler. Diapers can be needed for adults with various conditions, such as incontinence, mobility impairment, severe diarrhea or dementia. Adult diapers are made in various forms, including those resembling traditional child diapers, panties, and pads that resemble a sanitary napkin (known as incontinence pads).
In the medical community, professionals are trained to use alternative terms such as "brief" rather than "diapers" for self-esteem, since the term "diaper" is associated with children and therefore may have a negative connotation. But in practice, most health workers are accustomed to calling them diapers, especially those that resemble children's diapers.

People with medical conditions that cause them to have urinary or fecal incontinence often require diapers or similar products because they can not control their bladder or intestines. People lying in bed or in wheelchairs, including those with good bowel and bladder control, can also wear diapers because they can not access toilets independently. Those with cognitive impairment, such as dementia, may require diapers because they may not recognize their need to reach the toilet.
The absorbent incontinence products come in various types (drip collectors, pads, underwear and adult diapers), each with different capacities and sizes. The largest volume of consumed products falls into the low absorbency range of products, and even when it comes to adult diapers, the cheapest and least absorbent brands are used the most. This is not because people choose to use the most inexpensive and less absorbent brands, but rather because medical facilities are the biggest consumers of adult diapers, and they have a requirement to change patients as often as every two hours. The use of adult diapers can be a source of shame, and products are often marketed under euphemisms such as incontinence pads.
In 2006, seventeen students taking the geriatric pharmacotherapy course participated in a volunteer "diapers" exercise to help them understand the impact of incontinence on older adults. Students, who wear adult diapers a day before writing a paper about it, describe the experience as alien and physically challenging, noting that being in diapers has a very negative impact on them and that a better solution for incontinence is needed. In 2008, Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman revealed that he is considering using his own adult diapers to test their absorption following complaints that nursing home residents are forced to stay in diapers that remain unchanged for days at a time. Smitherman's proposal led him to criticism from unions who argued that priority was not the capacity of diapers but a lack of staff that affected how often they were changed, and he later apologized.
