Volkswagen Passat ( listen Ã, ) is a large family car produced and marketed by Volkswagen since 1973, and now in the eighth generation. It is positioned between Volkswagen Golf (Jetta) and Volkswagen Arteon in the current Volkswagen line-up and has been marketed as diverse as Dasher , Santana , Quantum , Magotan , Carousel and Rust . Passat's successor generation carries the internal Volkswagen designations B1, B2, etc. Initially (but no longer) this title is parallel to the Audi 80 and A4 with which the Passat platforms share.
In 2008, Volkswagen launched the Passat CC, a variant of the "four-door coupÃÆ'à ©" from Passat.
Volkswagen currently markets two Passat variants globally. In January 2011, Volkswagen announced that a new mid-size sedan (NMS) under construction at the Chattanooga Volkswagen assembly plant for the North American market will be named Passat. Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive also manufactures Passat NMS in Nanjing plant. NMS is sold in the markets of North America, South Korea, China, and the Middle East. Volkswagen Passat NMS won the 2012 Trend of Car Trends this Year. The new Passat model enters production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

B1 ( Type 32; 1972-1984)
The first generation Volkswagen Passat was launched in 1973. Type body offered initially is a two and four-door sedan and three versions and five similar doors. Externally the fourth along with modern fastback style design, styled by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. In essence, the first Passat was a fastback version of the mechanically identical Audi 80 sedan, introduced a year earlier. The five-door station wagon was introduced in 1974, which in the North American market was sold as the Audi Fox. In Europe, the Passat is equipped with two rectangular headlamps, two revolutions of 7 inches, or four rounds of 5.5 inches depending on the specifications. The Passat was one of Europe's most modern family cars at the time, and was intended as a replacement for the aging Volkswagen Type 3 and Type 4. The only other European car of its size that features front-wheel drive and hatchback is Renault 16 and Austin Maxi.
Passat initially used a four-cylinder OHC 1.3 liter engine (55 PS) and 1.5 liter (75 hp). also used in the Audi 80 - paired longitudinally with front wheel drive, in the Audi tradition, with a four-speed manual transmission or three-speed automatic. It has a MacPherson strut front suspension with a powerful spring/springs spring setup on the back.
The 1.5 liter SOHC was enlarged to 1.6 liters in August 1975 with unchanged power ratings and slightly higher torque ratings. In July 1978, Diesel Passat became available, fitted with a 1.5 liter VW Golf diesel (50 PS (37 kW; 49 hp)), followed in February 1979 by Passat GLI with a 1.6 liter fuel injection engine version.
The entire range received a facelift in 1977 (launched in 1978 outside Europe), featuring subtly revised interior and styling improvements including re-positioned indicators and depending on the model, either four rounds or two rectangular lights.
In North America, the car is called Volkswagen Dasher. Three and five-door hatchbacks and model station wagons were launched in North America during and during the 1974 model year. The only engine available is a 1.5-liter inline carbureted four developed 75 hp (56 kW) (or 70 hp (52 kW ) in 1975), was replaced from a 1976 model by Bosch fuel-injected 1.6 liters four 78 hp (58 kW). The North American cars are equipped with a single DOT standard lamp.
In 1978, Dasher received a facelift along the European Passat line, with quad-beam sealed lights and a large polyurethane enclosed bumper. Trim is also improved and travel softens. 1979 saw the introduction of a 1.5 liter diesel engine, which produced only 48 PS (35 kW) in a car of 1,130 kg (2,490 pounds). 0-100 km/h for Diesel is 19.4 seconds, 6.2 seconds slower than petrol engine (gasoline). All gasoline engines were dropped for North America in 1981, in preparation for the next generation.
In Brazil, the Passat B1 was produced from June 1974 to 1988. Since the Audi 80 was not marketed in Brazil, Passat received a different Audi front-end treatment after a facelift for 1979. Originally with a 1.5 liter engine, during the long life cycle many improvements of the platform The B2 was later introduced, such as the 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines, a special Brazil facelift in 1985, and a five-speed gearbox. The sports version, named Passat TS 1.6 and then Passat GTS 1.8 Pointer was also introduced.

B2 ( Type 32B; 1981-1988)
The second generation Volkswagen Passat was launched in 1981. The platform, named B2, is once again based on the corresponding version of the Audi 80, which was launched in 1978. The B2 Passat is slightly longer and the updated car styling is instantly recognizable as the Passat, most obvious is the rectangular headlights. At the moment, front-wheel drive and hatchbacks are commonplace in this car's size - the popular popular example is the Opel Ascona/Vauxhall Cavalier launched in the same year.
In addition to Passat and Variants hatchbacks (real/wagon), there is also a conventional three-box saloon, which until 1985 facelift was sold as Volkswagen Santana in Europe. In the US, the Passat/Santana is sold as a Quantum Volkswagen, available in a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan and wagon model, but a five-door hatchback is never sold there and a three-door hatchback is dropped. after less than two years. The Syncro four-wheel drive version was introduced in October 1984, initially only with a more powerful five-cylinder engine.
Passat/Santana is also manufactured and commercially available in China, Mexico, South America and South Africa as well. In Mexico, it was marketed from 1984 to 1988 as VW Corsar and Corsar Variant (4 door sedan and 5-door cart, respectively). In Argentina, from 1987 to 1991 as VW Carat. In Brazil, the wagon model was thrown VW Quantum. Saloon and Passat plantations were produced in South Africa for local markets until 1987.
Like the previous generation, the B2 Passat is mainly sold with gasoline engines and four-cylinder diesels. Unlike its predecessors, however, the top-of the line version received a five-cylinder Audi or a 1.9-2.2-liter VW engine. The 5-cylinder version is sold in the US as Quantum GL-5. In addition to manual four and five speed and three-speed automatic gearbox, Passat/Santana is also available with 4 E transmission that attracts the attention of VW. This, also called "Formel E" has a very high top gear, which is combined with a freewheeling mechanism, giving better mileage. Automatic stop/start is also available in some markets. The four-wheel-drive system used in Passat Variant Syncro shares the mechanics of the Audi 80 and not Volkswagen Golf Syncro. The bottom plate of Syncro is almost entirely different, requiring transmission tunnels, relocated gas tanks and no spare tires properly (to make room for the rear axle assembly complex). Only more popular real is reengineered. Syncro is also available in the North American market, with only a five-cylinder engine.
In 1985, this range received a slight facelift, consisting of larger new bumper, interior retouch, new front grille, and new rear lights on the hatchback version. The three-door hatchback was stopped, while the Santana name plate was dropped in Europe. The front of the saloon is now the same as the hatchback and estate. The North American version, still known as Quantum, gets European-style composite headlamps.
On March 31, 1988, production ended (although the Syncro model continued to produce until June) with 3,345,248 built in Germany. Total world production amounts to at least 4.5 million units.
B3 and B4 ( Typ 35i; 1988-1996)
The third generation Passat was introduced in March 1988 in Europe, 1990 in North America, and 1995 in South America. The lack of grille makes the front end car styling reminiscent of the old Volkswagen, rear engine, like the 411, and also duplicated as a modern styling trend. This style was developed from the 1981 Auto 2000 aerodynamic concept car (cd 0.25).
At that time, it was the first transverse engine layout of the Passat to be built on a platform designed by Volkswagen, rather than sharing it with the Audi saloon. The car, although B3 is designated in the Volkswagen nomenclature platform, is largely based on platform A as used for smaller Golf models, but stretches in all directions. Many components are shared directly between these vehicles. The Passat generation is sold as a four-door saloon or five-door estate, with Passat not being sold as a hatchback from this point onwards. It is marketed under the name Passat in all markets; in North America, this is the first.
Fuel injected gasoline engine provides better performance and refinement than previously used carburetor units. They are mounted transversely, and the floorpan is engineered to receive the 'Syncro' Volkswagen four-wheel drive system. Engine options are 2.0-liter 16-valve engine in GL model, 1.8-liter engine in CL model (not available in North America, all CLs, GLs, and GLSs have 2.0 16v), The 1.8 8v 112 bhp PB engine from Golf GTi is also used in the Passat GT model. The new Volkswagen 2.8-liter VR6 engine (also used in Golf and Corrado) on the GLX/GLS model (introduced in 1991 in Europe and 1992 in North America), and the G60 engine (available only on the Canadian Syncro model for the North American Market). The VR6 engine delivers top speeds of up to 224 kilometers per hour (139 mph). The 1.9 liter and 1.6 liter diesel engines are also available as an option.
1993 facelift (Passat B4)
Passat B3 was a very facelift in 1993, and although B4 was appointed, it was not a completely new model. The revised exterior facelift body panels except for roofs and greenhouses, with the most obvious exterior changes seeing the grille's reintroduction to match the styling of the same-generation Volkswagen models of the era, such as the Mk3 Golf and Jetta. The interior is slightly updated and includes safety equipment, such as dual front airbags and pre-tensioner seatbelts, although the basic dashboard design remains unchanged. The grille was introduced to provide a more aggressive front view, as previous models looked too 'passive'.
The car is available with Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine - a 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, producing 210 newton meters (155 lbf? Ft) of torque at 1,900 rpm, 66 kilowatts (90 PS, 89 bhp)) at 3,750 rpm. It performed a US EPA fuel efficiency rating for a 45 mile US gallon sedan (5.2 L/100 km; 54 mpg -imp ) highway. Combined with a choice of 98 liters (21.6 liter galer, 25.9 gal US 28 liter) fuel tank, the TDI B4 wagon has a range of 1800 km (1200 mi) in a single fuel tank. The TDI B4 cart saw less than 1,000 US sales during 1996 to 1997.
B5 and B5.5 ( Typ 3B and 3BG; 1996-2006)
The all-new Passat, based on the Volkswagen Group B5 platform, was launched in 1996 in Continental Europe, in February 1997 in England, and 1998 in North America. The PL45 platform was distributed with the first generation "Typ 8D" Generation Audi A4, unveiled 2 years earlier, and looking back to Passat sharing an elegant machine layout platform with Audi's equivalent model for the first time since the second generation (B2) Passat in 1981, which shares the platform with the second generation "Typ 81" Audi 80/Audi 90 (A4 is the successor to the Audi 80 line).
Passat introduces a new design language, first seen on Concept 1 concept cars, for the latest generation of Volkswagen, such as Mk4 Golf, Bora and Polo Mk4. Aerodynamic work gives B5 Passat drag coefficient of 0.27 (saloon model).
This car features a fully four-independent front suspension; and semi-independent torque rays for the front-wheel-drive model or independent suspension on 4motion 4WD models. 4WD was introduced in 1997 as an option for the 1.8-liter, 2.8-liter V6, 2.0-liter TDI and 2.5-liter V6 V6 engine, using the second generation Torsen T-2 4WD system to minimize traction loss. The 1.8 liter petrol engine in Passat and the Audi A4 has a lower oil capacity than the transversal applications of the same engine (4.6 liters in transverse, 4.3 quartz longitudes), and may suffer from oil sludge problems as a result, if not altered at regular intervals with fully synthetic oil. Four transmission options are available: 5-speed manual transmission, 6-speed manual transmission (codename 01E), 4-speed automatic transmission, and 5-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic.
The 1.6-liter gasoline engine was dropped in 1999, leaving a 20-liter 1.8-liter valve as an entry-level engine.
facelift 2001 (Passat B5.5 - Typ 3BG)
B5 The Passat model built after the end of 2001, also known as the B5.5 model (3BG in Europe), received a few stylistic and mechanical changes, including revised optical projector lamps, bumpers, tail lights, and chrome trim. 1.8 non-turbo halted, with eight 1.6 liter valves now the most powerful gasoline engine.
The 4.0 liter W8 engine that produces 275 PS (202 kW) was introduced in 2001 in a luxury version of the car which includes a standard 4motion all-wheel drive. This machine is intended to be a test bed for the new W Volkswagen Group engine technology, which will make an appearance in W12 in Phaeton, Audi A8 and Bentley Continental GT, and W16 engine at Bugatti Veyron. The machine was discontinued in 2004.
In China, the Shanghai-Volkswagen Passat B5 LW was introduced in late 1999. Under the extended B5 PL45 platform, this long wheelbase version was torn down and launched in Europe as the "Superb" code in 2001. Both have 100 millimeters (3.9 Ã, in ) wheelbase and longer length than the standard Passat B5. In 2003, a powerful 2.0 liter Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine produced 136 PS (100 kW) was added. The latest version called Passat Lingyu was released in 2005. It received 2.0 liter, 1.8 liter Turbo, and a 2.8 liter V6 gasoline engine. At the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show, the updated Passat Lingyu is featured.
B6 and B7 ( Typ 3C; 2005-2015)
The Passat B6 was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005, and was launched in Europe in the summer of 2005. Unlike its predecessor, the B6 Passat no longer shares the platform with the equivalent Audi A4 model. Based on a modified version of the PQ46 Mk5 Golf platform, the B6 features a transverse engine layout rather than the longitudinal layout of its predecessor, such as previous B3 and B4 generations, associated with A2 (Golf) platform.
The transverse engine layout of the four-wheel drive version, marketed as 4motion, dictates the switch from the Torsen B5 central differential, to the Haldex Traction multi-plate clutch. Haldex system changes also change the handling closer to the front-wheel drive car. Compared to Torsen, Haldex can steer more unequal torque to the front wheel (from 100: 0 to 50:50 bias from front to back), thus providing a wider bias range than 75:25 to 25:75 from the B5 Passat. Haldex is a reactive type system, behaving as a front-wheel-drive vehicle until a slip is detected, at which point up to a maximum of 50% of the torque can be transmitted to the rear axle. See the related Audi quattro article (four-wheel-drive system) for more information.
Fuel Stratified Injection is used in every version of the Passat petrol engine, ranging from 1.4 to 3.6 liters (DOHC 1.6 liter can reach 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 11.4 seconds, and 200 km/hour (124.3 Ã, mph) for manual transmission version), but the multi-valve 2.0-liter Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel is the most sought-after version in Europe (available in 140 PS (103 kW, 138 hp) and 170 PS (125 kW; 168Ã, hp) variant). In the US market, 200 PS (147 kW, 197 hp) 2.0 liter turbocharged I4 is a base engine, or PS6 3.6 liter 270 PS (206 kW, 276 hp) engine as an upgrade, with six-speed manual (only available on model 2.0 -liter base turbocharged) and automatic transmission. In the 2009 model year, the VR6 engine and the 4motion option are no longer available in the US on Passat sedans and carts, but are available at Passat CC.
In February 2008, the 2.0 FSI was replaced with a new 1.8 liter TSI engine developed by Audi and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.8 liter T rated at 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp), 250 newton meters (184 lbf? Ft) and reaches 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, reaches a top speed of 220 kilometers per hour (136, 7 Ã, mph). At the same time the 2.0-liter TDI engine from the Audi range, incorporating common rail injection technology replaces the existing 2.0-liter TDI unit. Common rail technology uses less fuel and quieter operation. This machine is part of a wider Volkswagen Group policy for sharing machines.
The Passat Estate wins the overall winners of Practical Caravans Towcar of the Year Awards 2008 for its various towing features such as its Trailer Stability Program.
In Asia, Passat PQ46 was released by FAW-VW as Magotan , after Volkswagen's other joint venture Shanghai Volkswagen has decided to continue to use the B5 platform for Passat and Passat Lingyu (Passbase long-wheelbase). Since August 2010, the Passat B6 wagon version will be offered in Asia, which is a fully imported model. But this car is only called Volkswagen Variant in China, so as not to refer to the name "Passat" or "Magotan".
Exclusive to Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand is a limited edition of Passat R36, featuring a 3.6 liter V6 engine. Passat version is released 300 hp, and features a double exhaust tip, aggressive front hood, and All Wheel Drive.
Passat CC
CC ("Comfort Coupà © à ©") is a 4-door coupe version of Passat . It debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Originally intended to compete with the same stylish Mercedes CLS, Passat CC intends to be more stylish and luxurious than the previously released Passat B6. In the US, the name Passat is dropped, and the car is sold only CC . Some of the special options for CC include a hands-free parking, flight departure prevention, intelligent cruise control, and adaptive suspension. The engines offered at CC reflect them from the regular Passat, with a choice of 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder base, or optional 3.6-liter VR6, which includes a 4-movement all-wheel drive.
CC made in China released by FAW-VW on July 15, 2010. Two engine options are provided: 1.8 liter T and 2.0 liter T.
Volkswagen facelifted Passat CC at the end of 2011 for 2012, with styling updates similar to the larger Phaeton. For an updated model, Volkswagen has dropped the Passat name for all markets, now matching the Volkswagen CC branding used since 2008 in North America.
facelift 2010 (Passat B7)
The B6 Passat facelifted by Klaus Bischoff and Walter de Silva and was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 2010. Although designated "B7", the car is not an all-new model. Facelift produces a new external body panel except roof and greenhouse, with prominent changes in the grille and headlights. The height dimensions and overall width are unchanged from the B6 Passat, while the length increases 4 mm. New features include Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC), Dynamic Light Assist free glare-free rays, fatigue detection systems and automated "city emergency braking" systems. Arrived at dealership in January 2011.
The interior displays minor detail changes of the B6, although the basic dashboard design remains unchanged.
In India, the B6 version is likely to be replaced with the B7 version. Also the FAW-VW-built Magotan will also be replaced by the long-wheelbase version of Passat B7. The new model will be exclusive to the Indian market, and at least 100 mm longer than the European B7.
In China, the FAW-VW-built Magotan will also be replaced by the long-wheelbase version of Passat B7. The new model will be exclusive to the Chinese market, and at least 100 mm longer than the European B7. Machines available for the Magotan B7L range from 1.4-liter T, 1.8-liter T to 2.0-liter T, EA390 3.0-liter VR6 FSI engine specially developed selected for the top models.
In Malaysia, Volkswagen Global has authorized DRB-HICOM for assembly at the Pekan starting 2011 facility. Passat is the best selling model of Volkswagen Malaysia in 2012 and 2013.
Passat Alltrack
In October 2010, Volkswagen presented at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show the Passat Alltrack. The Passat Alltrack bridges the gap between VW passengers and SUV range consisting of Tiguan and Touareg. Passat Alltrack is intended to compete with Subaru Outback, which creates a new niche market. They (Alltrack & Outback) both have similarities in high rise and external body kits.
Passat Alltrack has improved ground clearance from 135 to 165 mm which improves the angle of approach from 13.5 to 16 degrees, the departure angle from 11.9 to 13.6 degrees and ramp angle from 9.5 to 12.8 degrees when compared to the cart Passat standard. Passat Alltrack is the only VW in the range of passengers offering 4Motion with off-road driving program, off-road system working with ABS, electronic differential lock (EDL), DSG & amp; hill descent assist system for controlling vehicles in off-road expeditions.
Passat Alltrack engine range consists of two TDI 2.0 liter with output of 103 kW/140 hp & amp; 125 hp kW/170 and two petrol engines, 1.8 liters producing 118 hp/160 hp and 2.0 liter TSI produce 155 hp/207 hp. The TDI model becomes standard with BlueMotion Technology package with Stop/Start system and battery regeneration mode to restore braking energy. Two variants of low-powered 2.0-liter TDI and 1.8-liter TSI are only available in front-wheel drive format with 6-speed manual transmission. The rest of the range with 4Motion has an automatic 6 speed DSG manual transmission, except TDI 2.0 liter with 103 hp/140 hp which has 6 speed manual option.
In 2012 at the New York Auto Show, VW shows the Passat Alltrack with 2.0 liter TDI 125Ã,Ã kW/170Ã, hp under the nameplate Alltrack Concept to measure response for future markets in the off-road cart segment.
DARPA edition without driver
The unlicensed version of the Passat Wagon is second in the 2007 Urban DARPA Challenge. In the spring of 2015, Swiss telecommunications company Swisscom tested the Volkswagen Passat without drivers on the streets of Zurich.
B8 ( Typ 3G; 2015-current)
The eighth generation Passat model was introduced in November 2014 on the Continent of Europe and in January 2015 in England as a saloon and a four-door plantation. Following other Volkswagen Group passenger vehicles such as Volkswagen Golf Mk7, it is based on the MQB platform variant, a modular car construction platform designed for transverse, front-engined cars. To reduce weight, lightweight materials such as aluminum and vacuum-formed steel have been used. According to the chairman of the board of Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, B8 is a "[...] premium car without a premium price", indicating that the Passat nameplate was moved to a compact executive car segment, as opposed to the previous generation model conceived as a large family car. although some automotive journalists have criticized this strategy for effectively putting Passat in competition with Audi A4 - which is expected to move further upmarket for the B9 generation, to be launched by the end of 2015.
Passat is introduced with a large number of advanced driver assistance systems, including semi-automated parking systems, emergency driver assistants, which will automatically control the vehicle if the driver has undergone a medical emergency, a self-contained shipping control system for the highway. speeds of up to 210 km/h, collision avoidance systems with pedestrian and steering monitoring of variable ratios are marketed as "progressive steering" which will adjust the steering wheel ratio in relation to the current speed.
The Passat B7 line-up engine was reintroduced with this generation with slightly increased power output, variable displacement for the 1.4 liter TSI gasoline engine and two selective catalytic reduction diesel (SCR) engines, with one twin-turbocharged. A plug-in hybrid, Passat GTE, with updated battery packs from Golf GTE and Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is scheduled for launch in mid-2015 in the UK with sales beginning in 2016.
Led by new design chief Walter de Silva and VW acquisition of Bertone coachbuilder, Passat 2015 won the European Car Award of 2015.
Facelift
Volkswagen is updating the North American Passat in 2015 for the 2016 model year with styling and technology updates.
For 2016, revamped door, roof and stamped Passat are the only parts that are shared with the outgoing model. Hood, front fender, front and rear bumpers, and revised trunklid.
Passat now offers an optional LED headlamp and back light, a black accented front bumper, a rear-facing diffuser and a special 19-inch wheel.
The updated dashboard displays the company's MIB II system (modular infotainment platform) with two touch screen sizes available, depending on the preferred package. This screen will also display proximity sensor to bring up relevant controls as your hand gets closer to the screen. The system is set to offer Car-Net Volkswagen's connectivity system, with Apple CarPlay compatibility, Android Auto, and MirrorLink, which allows you to connect virtually all smart phones seamlessly.
The Passat refresh has automatic post-collision braking, which prevents the car from moving away and crashing into other objects after the initial impact, as standard on all models, such as a rear view camera. Adaptive cruise control, front-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitor with rear traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and parking steering assistance are all available depending on the trim level.
The 2016 Passat is planned to offer the same three engine options featured in an outgoing car: the basic model of a turbocharged 1.8 liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 3.6 liter VR6, and a 4-liter four-cylinder TDI diesel. 1.8 T will do a 38 mpg -US toll road (6Ã, L/100Ã, km) with automatic transmission. Following the company's emissions scandal, VW stopped sales of 2.0-liter TDI vehicle. The 2.0 liter TSI is offered in place of TDI.
North America
