Halo Burger , formerly known by its full name Bill Thomas' Halo Burger, is a chain of fast food restaurants based in Genesee County, Michigan owned by Halo Country, LLC. Beginning in 1923 as the original Kewpee location and separating from the Kewpee network in 1967 with two locations, the chain has grown to 17 locations in the region only down to 12.
It is not easy to specify a single establishment date for the company because the company evolved from the original Kewpee location opened in 1923 which expanded into a chain before 1944 when Thomas started his business which would later be named Halo Burger by renting the original location.

Samuel V. Blair opened the Kewpee Hotel restaurant in downtown Flint and expanded to around 400 locations in 1939 through licensing on behalf of it. William "Bill" V. Thomas began work at Kewpee in 1938. Thomas began renting the original Harrison Street, Flint's location of Blair on his retirement on April 1, 1944. Blair died in 1945 and Thomas continued to rent locations and pay royalties for use Kewpee's name from the estate to the Kewpee trademark and the location of Blair's plantation was sold in 1958. Thomas could buy the Flint location but Kewpee's trademark was sold to Ed Adams of Toledo, Ohio. Thomas expanded with a second Kewpee location in downtown Flint with the purchase of Vernor's Ginger Ale building in 1951.

Adams switched from a Kewpee trademark license to a full franchise arrangement in 1967. Thomas rejected this new arrangement and changed the name of his restaurant to Bill Thomas' Halo Burger. The first location of Halo Burgers just under the name Halo Burger opened in 1973 at Linden Road. But during construction, Bill Thomas died that year. In 1976, two other locations joined the network on West Pierson Street and in downtown Grand Blanc in the former Perkins Pancake House. In 1979, Harrison's location emptied to pave the way for the University of Michigan-Flint parking lot. The staff from the former Harrison Street location moved to the newly opened Halo Burger serving the east side of Flint.
The 1980s became a decade of expansion with 10 other locations, beginning in 1984 with other Downtown locations. In 1985, Halo Burger expanded to Birch Run, Michigan, with locations opened on rented properties at Conlee Oil Company station. Locations in Saginaw and Southwest Flint sides opened in 1986. Other locations in Saginaw were followed in 1987 along with Richfield Road and Genesee Valley Center locations. Three other locations opened in 1988: at Fenton, on Atherton Road and on Corunna Road near the Ballenger Highway. The Saginaw Center, Genesee Valley Center and Corunna Road are then closed. The location of their Grand Blanc Downtown was closed in 1998 and replaced by a location in Grand Blanc Township.
On September 5, 2002, Halo Burger took over the former Campus Cafe at the University of Michigan-Flint University Center. In November, the company pulled back the flashlight that was distributed with children's food. On July 22, 2007, all 11 locations were closed for one day for possible E. coli contamination as their supplier, Meat Abbott, has withdrawn a number of meat products and received meat from temporary suppliers. Due to the new student housing and 24-hour food service, Sodexo, located along the housing, the University Center location closed on 21 April 2008.

Early attempts to sell chains to key employees failed after problems with banks. Because his son was not interested in 2010, the Thomas family sold nine chain locations to Dortch Enterprises, which operated several Subway restaurants in Michigan, with sales completed on December 29, 2010 at a price of about $ 10 million. Dortch will expand to a new location and make more of the restaurant to "quick casual feel" with earth tones and "upscale decor". In 2011, the company announced that it added locations in the Oakland County/Detroit metro area by the end of 2012 and that they would add 2 to 3 locations per year. One opened at a gas station at Mount Morris in February 2012. In August 2012, Dortch filed and received approval for a location plan for the location alongside Halo Burger-Subway at Belsay Road in Burton.
In January 2013, the location of Fenton Halo Burger moved to the former Burger King building on Leroy Street. The new Brighton, Michigan location is scheduled to open in May in Livingston County and will be their first location in the Detroit Metro area. In March, Dortch announced plans for five Oakland County locations: Troy, Clarkston, Novi, Bingham Farms and Farmington Hills and East Lansing locations to open this year along with the existing Brighton site. The location along with Halo Burger-Subway Burton opens March 27th.
On February 5, 2013, Dortch Halo Enterprises sued the Grand Blanc man who used @haloburger Twitter handle since 2009 and is unwilling to hand over the grip to the company without payment. The man's defense is that he does not use it commercially, Twitter handles first come first served and the trademark "Halo Burger" should be rejected by the US Trademark Office because it is too similar to other trademarks. On May 8, 2013, Halo Burger at Clarkston opened, the first in Oakland County with a change to a fast casual format with no drive-throughs at Oakland County locations. Dortch Enterprises sold 15 Halo Burger chain locations to Halo Country LLC on January 14, 2016. Important location
The previous location of Downtown Flint is Vernor's Retail Store and Sandwich shop built in 1929. A Vernor's Ginger Ale mural (including gnome gnome mascot) includes the adjacent Greater Flint Arts Council building and painted by John Gonsowski.
