Histori
1999-2001: Formasi dan LP Optimis
The band was started by old friends Knights and Paridjanian. The two meet at a young age and spend most of their childhood together. Although they split up after the Knights went to film school and Paridjanian tried to form a band in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, they soon reunited and collaborated on what would become their first EP, The Door, finally released through Anvil Records in 1999 as a limited vinyl release. This caused the band to attract the attention of larger record labels. Source Records will eventually release two more EPs, The State of Things EP and Fight or Flight , prompting NME to announce "The Turin brakes inhabit the space fully alone, fully formed and very emotional... give them the loyalty they deserve. "
The source reprinted the song "The Door" before releasing their first album, The Optimist LP , in 2001. The album, released in the United States by Astralwerks, was met with critical acclaim, spawning a few simple UK singles success, "Underdog (Save Me)" (reaching # 39 on the UK Singles Charts), Mind Over Money (reached # 31) and "Emergency 72", and received a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. In August 2001, the album was certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry. A United States opening tour plan for Stereophonics and Matthew Jay, was canceled for the September 11 terrorist attacks. However, the band played in more than 80 places in Europe and the United States that year.
2002-2004: Eter Song and mainstream success
Early 2002, the band started working on their second album. After a demo session in Rye, United Kingdom, the band flew to Los Angeles, California to record with producer Tony Hoffer in Summer 2002. In October 2002, it produced the single Long Distance (reaching number 31) and the tour arena supports David Gray.
In February 2002, the band embarked on their biggest headline tour to date, covering 24 places in the UK in a month, including two sold-out shows at Brixton Academy, a place they often visit when growing up. On March 1, 2003, their single "Painkiller" became their biggest hit to date, reaching the top 5 on the singles chart.
The second album of the Turin Brakes, Ether Song , was released on March 3, 2003. The album is a departure from the acoustic sounds that have brought them success with their first album. The album was popular to reach number 4 on the UK Albums Charts when released and to get a Gold certificate by the British Phonographic Industry four days after its release, on March 7, 2003.
After a successful release, the record company sought to replicate its commercial success by releasing the third single from the album, The Average Man . However, British radio channels do not use singles as they did with previous releases and graphics performance (no 35) was viewed as a disappointment by fans and record labels.
The commercial performance of the album creates tension between the band and their labels. In fact, between tours in the United States (their own headline tour and supporting David Gray) in the summer of 2003, the band recorded a new single to re-release Eter Song with Tony Hoffer. The first release of Eter Song , featuring an orange version of cover and single 5 Mile was released on October 6, 2003. 5 Mile charted higher than > Average Human (no 31) but largely ignored by British radio stations. Overall, the album was re-released four times during its lifetime, and received various inter-region bonuses and versions. The band was noted to be unhappy with the way the record companies treated them and fans about the release.
Following the success and stress of the Eter Song , the band took a short break, but not before touring Australia and New Zealand and released DJ mix album for Azuli Records' Late Night Tales series in February 2004. Mix album (2004) is a collection of some of their favorite songs and major influences, and also contains The Rolling Stones "Moonlight Mile" as a cover. The band has performed several sets of DJs in the London area for years.
The band spent the first half of 2004 writing and recording new material in their own studio, which they woke up in Brixton, London. In the summer of 2004, the band played a successful set at Somerset House, playing a selection of old and new material, including future singles Fishing For A Dream
2005: JackInABox and Live in Palladium
Their third album, Jackinabox, was released for critical acclaim in early June 2005. It was preceded by a single "Fishing for a Dream," which did not match the band's expectations (charting at 32). Despite the lack of games or hit singles JackInABox is still selling well enough, it hit the Top 10 UK Albums in the first week and Silver was certified by BPI on June 10, 2005. The album was supported by the first full band tour in the United States, as well as the "Over and Over," which is serviced on US radio.
Following the success of the Jackinabox and the next tour, the download-only album, Live at the Palladium , recorded in London was released in November 2005. Released one day after the concert took place in London, it is available on the band's website. Then he also got a release on iTunes and did well on the download chart. In the October/November 2005 tour, the band also sold Red Moon EP . This acoustic EP features a new ("acoustic" version of "Red Moon", two new tracks (Live Favorite Jet Trail and Love Is All You Worth) and Red Red Chili Peppers -cover "Breaking The Girl" (recorded on KCRW ).
2006-2008: Dark in the Fire
The band spent the first half of 2006 writing new songs, sometimes doing new and old good work at small shows in the UK. The band toured intimately in November 2006 to try out new material. In January 2007 the band entered a recording studio in London to record their fourth album with producer Ethan Johns. After three weeks the band rested (on January 29, Paridjanian's wife gave birth to a girl), but the session resumed a few weeks later in a larger studio (also in London). On the last day of March 2007 the band announced that they had completed the recording sessions, and recorded 17 songs.
The new album, Dark on Fire , was released in the UK in September 2007, preceded by the only download. "Stalker". On January 14, 2008, another single downloaded single was released: "Something In My Eye". The b-side is a cover version of Cat Stevens "Here Here My Baby". Both singles failed to make an impact on the singles charts, but the Dark on Fire charted no. 36 above 40.

Live footage of their show at Koko in London on November 11, 2011 was released as a live album.

In November 2012, the band returned to their studio to record material for their sixth studio album.

The Turin brakes are often compared to the many new acoustic bands that emerged in the late 1990s such as Elbow, Starsailor and the Norwegian band Kings of Convenience, whose 2001 album titled Quiet Is the New Loud is a helpful indicator from the band's first album. Every record, the Turin Brakes are trying to change their voice. While the first album featured many acoustic guitars, Eter Song featured more electric guitars and, overall, was much darker. The third album Jackinabox can be seen as a combination of the first two albums, with some funk effects. While Dark on Fire features a larger sound produced by Ethan Johns, 2010s > Explosion can be seen as returning to the The Optimist LP voice. The previous Turin brakes were performed directly as a 5-part to achieve full band sound, and joined on stage (and often in the studio) by Rob Allum (drums), Phil Marten (keyboard) and Eddie Myer (bass). It has now been reduced to 4-part after Marten's departure, with guitar playing Gale now becoming more prominent and richer contributing to the sound of life.
On September 6, 2012 all four members of the Turin Brakes played on the night of "Spirit of Talk Talk" at 229 Great Portland Street where they joined some former Talk Talk members to play several hits including It's My Life, with the band then playing their own set afterwards. Before playing the song "Painkiller" Gale announced to the audience that although it will not be obvious to most people, this song is strongly influenced by Talk Talk and by the work they did with producer Phill Brown in Kent countryside a few years ago.
