NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE) is a Fortune 200 energy company with approximately 45,900 megawatts of generating capacity, revenues of more than $ 17 billion, and about 14,000 employees across the United States and Canada. Mergers and acquisitions
On December 4, 2014, NextEra Energy announced plans to buy Hawaiian Electric Industries for $ 4.3 billion. However, in July 2016, Hawaii's Public Utilities Commission rejected the offer in a 2-0 vote over the doubt of NextEra Energy's commitment to the country's renewable energy goal, which ended the merger agreement. The proposed merger has the support of more than 25 local groups, including the Hawaii AFL-CIO and the Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce.
NextEra Energy and Energy Future Holdings, a parent company of Texas-based Oncor Electric Delivery, reached a $ 18.7 billion merger agreement on July 29, 2016, but the agreement was terminated in July 2017 after Texas Public Utilities Commission rejected the offer due to disagreement over control of Oncor's board of directors. It was revealed in January 2018 that South Carolina State Senator Mike Fanning and other state parliamentarians were negotiating with NextEra Energy about the possible purchase of SCANA and Santee Cooper. Litigation
In January 2018, NextEra Energy, together with Entergy, resigned from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) for disagreements on the trade group agenda. In February 2018, NextEra Energy filed a lawsuit against the NEI, accused the trade groups of "retaliation" and "extortion", claiming that the NEI revoked its ability to access the Personnel Data Access System (PADS), the database of nuclear industry personnel, except $ 860,000 has been paid. The president and CEO of NEI replied that the organization "strongly denies all charges in the NextEra lawsuit and will vigorously defend our position in court" and that "NextEra lost the ability to participate in PADS after choosing to terminate its NEI membership".
