Maywood is an area in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. In the Census of the United States 2010, the borough population was 9,555, reflecting a 32 (0.3%) increase of 9,523 calculated in the 2000 Census, which in turn increased by 50 (0.5%) from 9,443 counted in the 1990 Census.

Maywood was established as a territory on June 29, 1894, from parts of Midland Township, based on the results of the referendum held that day. Borough formed during the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then swept through Bergen County, where 26 boroughs were formed in the area in 1894 alone. The name of the area comes from the name of a station established in the area by the New Jersey Midland Railroad.

There are 3,769 housing units with an average density of 2,930.0 per square mile (1,131.3/km 2 ). The racial makeup of the borough is 74.78% (7,145) White, 5.34% (510) Black or African American, 0.18% (17) Native Americans, 10.98% (1,049) Asia, 0.02% (2) Pacific Islands, 6.16% (589) of other races, and 2.54% (243) of two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race is 18.68% (1.785) of the population.

There were 3,649 households where 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 12.1% had non-husbands female households, and 29.0% is not family. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the borough, the population is spread by 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% years or more. The median age was 41.7 years. For every 100 women there are 90.4 men. For every 100 women age 18 and older there are 87.6 men.

The 2006-2010 US Census Society Survey showed that (in 2010 the dollar-adjusted inflation) average household income was $ 82,792 (with a margin of error of $ 3,759) and the average family income was $ 97,776 (/- $ 5,312). In the 2000 US Census there were 9,523 people, 3,710 households, and 2,626 families living in the area. Population density was 7,326.2 people per square mile (2,828.3/km 2 ). There are 3,777 housing units with an average density of 2,905.7 per square mile (1,121.8/km 2 ). Racial makeup of the boroughs is 84.57% White, 2.79% African American, 0.07% Native American, 7.16% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Island, 3.31% of other races, and 2, 08% of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 11.71% of the population.

There are 3,710 households where 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% are married couples living together, 11.0% have non-husbands female households, and 29.2% are not family. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the borough the population is spread by 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% 65-year-olds or older. The average age is 40 years. For every 100 females, there are 86.9 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 83.5 men.

The average income for a household in the borough is $ 62,113, and the average income for the family is $ 73,419. Men have an average income of $ 49,566 versus $ 38,193 for women. The per capita income for the borough is $ 28,117. About 2.5% of families and 3.3% of the population are below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those aged 65 and older.

Economy

The central business district of the region is located on West Pleasant Avenue from the Maywood Avenue crossroads to Lincoln Avenue, and where most of the local restaurants and shops are located. The business district of Maywood is renovated through a "Streetscapes" grant that is used to repair sidewalks, roads and lighting.

The outlet at Bergen Town Center, formerly known as Bergen Mall, is mainly located in Paramus, with some malls in Maywood.

Coca-Cola uses coca leaf extract prepared by the Stepan Company plant in Maywood as its ingredients. The facility, known as Maywood Chemical Works (and also known as the Superfund site), was purchased by Stepan in 1959. This factory is the only commercial body in the country authorized by the Drug Enforcement Administration to import coca leaves, which mainly comes from Peru. Parks and recreation

Maywood's Memorial Park is across the street from Memorial School on Grant Avenue and is open to anyone. The park includes several baseball fields and a large open field for soccer, soccer, running, etc. Further back is a multi-ring concrete basketball court; a small park lined with dogs; and two jungle gyms with swings. Around the park is a 1/2-mile bike path.

Government

Local government

Maywood is set under the borough of New Jersey city government. The governing body consists of the Mayor and the Borough Council consisting of six board members, with all the massively elected positions based on the partisan as part of the November elections. A Mayor is directly elected by voters for a four-year term. The Borough Board comprises six members who are elected for a three year staggered period, with two seats coming for elections each year in a three-year cycle. The government's Borough form used by Maywood, the most commonly used system in the state, is the government of "weak mayor/strong council" in which board members act as legislative bodies with the mayor who lead the meeting and vote only in the event of a tie. The mayor may veto a procedure that is subject to voting by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. The mayor made committees and liaison assignments for board members, and most appointments were made by the mayor with the council's advice and approval.

In 2016, Maywood Mayor is Republican Adrian Febre, serving term of office ending December 31, 2019. Board member Borough is the President of the Council of Frank Morrone (R, 2018; who transfers the party from Democrats to the Republic in 2015), Rickie A. DeHeer (R 2017), Thomas Lindenau (R, 2016), Francis J. "Frank" Messar, III (R, 2017) and Claire Padovano (R, 2018).

Adrian Febre was appointed to serve the remainder of the term left by former Mayor Gregg Padovano who resigned over his appointment to a seat in the High Court of New Jersey. In turn, Michael Gervino was appointed in February 2015 to serve the remaining months of the ship's term vacated by Febre. Gervino won the election in November 2015 to serve the balance of the time period.

In an election held on November 4, 2013, Republican presidential candidate Adrian Febre and Republican newcomer Thomas Lindenau defeated Democratic rider Erich Fleischmann and Democratic newcomer Jonathan King, shifting the council from a 3-3 tie in 2013 to a four-member Republican vs. two Democrats.

Maywood is located in the 5th Congress District and is part of New Jersey's 38 state legislative district. Prior to the 2011 reapportionment after the 2010 Census, Maywood has been in the state's 37th state legislative district. Education

Maywood Public Schools serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In the academic year 2014-15, the district and its two schools have enrollment of 1,299 students and 69.3 class teachers (based on FTE), for teacher-student ratio 18.8: 1. Schools in the district (with enrollment 2014-15 from the National Center for Statistics Education) is the Memorial School (419 students in the PreK-3 class) and Maywood Avenue School (523; 4-8).

The district offers a variety of after-school activities ranging from cheerleaders to chess clubs, and where all students have the opportunity to contribute to their school newspaper, The Hawk (Grades 6-8) , and a new newspaper school , The Mini Hawk (Grades 4 and 5) , and the eighth graders can help with their yearbook. Emergency services

The Maywood police department has been serving the community since 1894 and has 22 officers inaugurated. Maywood Police Communications is managed by an EMD certified telecommunications operator that handles all 9-1-1 local emergency calls and sends all emergency services. Maywood has also inaugurated a Class 1 Special Law Enforcement Officer who helps control traffic and park patrols.

Maywood First Aid and Emergency Squad are composed entirely of all volunteers, who have two basic life support units. During the working day, two EMT staff units pay. Maywood FA & amp; ES is a member of the 24th New Jersey District First Aid Council.

Maywood has a volunteer fire department. There are two fire stations in Maywood. Station 1 (T17-E18) is located on Park Avenue and Station 2 (E19-R23) located on West Hunter Avenue. Maywood also has a Fire Police Station established in 1926. The Fire Police helps both the fire department and the police.

Maywood is home to the Roman Catholic Church of the Queen of Peace, First Presbyterian Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lutheran Zion Church, St. Episcopal Church Martin, and the Beth Israel Shrine, a Reconstruction Synagogue founded in 1928, which moved into its current location in 1931.

Roads and highways

In May 2010, the borough had a total of 24.91 miles (40.09 km) of highway, of which 21.06 miles (33.89 km) was maintained by the municipality, 3.54 miles (5.70 km) by Bergen County and 0.31 miles (0.50 km) by the New Jersey Transportation Department.

Historical site

The Maywood Train Station was restored after a proposal was made by the borough in 2002 to consider destroying the landmark. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003 as Building # 03000487. The station was restored by all volunteers, the nonprofit Maywood Station Historical Committee, which now operates the historic site as the Maywood Station Museum.
