The Jeep Cherokee is a line of American vehicles sold by Jeep under various classes of vehicles. Originally sold as a variant of the popular Jeep Wagoneer, Cherokee has evolved from a full-sized SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and eventually became its current incarnation as a crossover SUV. This nameplate has been used continuously in some form since 1974 and also spawned the most successful Jeep vehicle, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was originally slated to be part of the Cherokee lineup. This vehicle is named after the Native American Cherokee tribe.

First generation (SJ)

The Cherokee is a reintroduction of Jeep Wagoneer's two-door body style, with a redesigned greenhouse that removes C car pillars. Instead, the Cherokee uses a much wider D-pillar and a single fixed back side with an optional fold-out section. Previously, a two-door version was available on the Jeep Wagoneer line (from 1963 to 1967), although it had the same pillar and configuration window as the four-door Wagoneer. The Cherokee replaces the Jeepster Commando, whose sales do not meet expectations despite the vast 1972 changes. The Cherokee appeals to a younger market than the Wagoneer, which is considered more as a family SUV.

The Cherokee is marketed as a "sporty" two-door variant of the Jeep station wagon. The term "sport utility vehicle" appeared for the first time in the 1974 Cherokee sales brochure. Four doors were not added to the lineup until 1977. In addition to the basic models, the Cherokee trim levels included S (Sport), Chief, Golden Eagle, Golden Hawk, Limited, Classic, Sport, Pioneer, and Laredo..

Second Second generation (XJ)

While Wagoneer continued to produce for eight more years as the Grand Wagoneer, the Cherokee signboard was moved to a new platform for 1984. Without a traditional body-on-frame frame, the Cherokee featured a mild unibody design.

This generation Cherokee will eventually be known as a modern SUV innovator, because the rise of competitors as other manufacturers began to notice that this Jeep design began to replace ordinary cars. It also began replacing the role of the station wagon and "turning from truck into limousine in the eyes of innumerable suburban owners." XJ is "an important link in 4x4 evolution."

It will prove so popular that second-generation replacement Cherokee was released as a separate vehicle altogether as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which embarked on a sequential vehicle track as Jeep's main vehicle.

Third generation (KJ)

The third generation, marketed as Jeep Liberty in North America to distinguish itself from the Grand Cherokee, was introduced in April 2001 for the 2002 model year.

The Cherokee is priced between Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. It remains the smallest of the 4 door Jeep SUVs to a 4-door based crossover compass and the Patriot arrives for 2007. The Cherokee displays a unibody construction. It's assembled at the North Toledo Assembly Plant in the United States, as well as in other countries including Egypt and Venezuela.

It was the first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering. This is also the first Jeep to use two new machines PowerTech ; 150 horsepower (110 kW) 2.4 L straight-4, which was discontinued in 2006, and 210 horsepower (160 kW) 3.7 L V6. However, the Cherokee is not the first Jeep vehicle to use an independent front suspension, because the Wagoneer first used it in the 1963 model. But, the independent front suspension was limited to a four wheel drive version and, even then, was a short-lived option.

Fourth generation (KK)

Still using the name Jeep Liberty in North America, the Cherokee was redesigned in 2008. For the first time, a rebadged version of the Jeep model existed, as Dodge sold this version of Cherokee as a Dodge Nitro during the same time period as the fourth-generation Cherokee. It was eventually stopped because of slow sales and Sergio Marchionne wanted to avoid duplicate vehicles with Dodge and Jeep (as well as Chrysler) sharing the same sales network.

With smaller Patriots and Compasses now available to meet buyers who are aware of MPG, the four-cylinder engine was dropped from the Cherokee offer. The iron-block, aluminum-head V6 is the only machine available for 2008. The drawing capacity is 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). Jeep stopped the Cherokee CRD for the American market because it could not meet the more stringent 2007 emissions standards for diesel engines. The transmission options are both carry-overs: six-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Standard equipment includes electronic stability control with mitigation roll, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with the help of brakes. New features include standard side airbags. Optional features are rain-sensing wipers, Sirius Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, navigation system and MyGig entertainment system, complete with 30GB hard drive.

Fifth Generation (KL)

For the fifth generation, the Cherokee nameplate returned to North America as the vehicle converted into a crossover and developed into a medium to make room for the Jeep Renegade under Cherokee and Compass. It was introduced for the 2014 model year at the 2013 New York International Auto Show and sales began in November 2013. Cherokee is the first Jeep vehicle to be built on the Compact AS/Compact platform, developed jointly by Chrysler and Orders. Jeep Cherokee was built at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio.

The Cherokee has a high fuel economy rating of 31 miles per gallon US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg -imp ) and a fuel economy rating 45% better than the replaced Liberty/Cherokee.

Despite the controversial front-end styling, the fifth-generation Cherokee would be such a sales success that the FCA halted the slow sales of Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 (both mechanically similar to Cherokee) in order to increase production capacity for Cherokee to meet demand. For 2019, the front end should be updated to a more conservative style.
