History

1992-1994: Pre-launch: Game Show Channels

On May 7, 1992, Sony Pictures Entertainment joined the United Video Satellite Group to launch the Game Show Channel , to be launched in 1993. The channel announcement was made by SPE president Mel Harris. Sony Pictures ownership includes Merv Griffin Enterprises and Barris Industries, Inc. SPE competes with The Family Channel in launching channel events when The Family Channel announces the launch of its own service called Game Channel.

On December 2, 1992, Sony Pictures Entertainment made a deal to acquire Barry & A truly existing gaming library, and in a separate agreement, reached a 10-year license agreement for the rights to the gaming library Mark Goodson's more than 20,000 episodes including What's My Line? , Family Feud and Say the Truth . Following the deal, Sony said it would sell equity stake in the network for Mark Goodson Productions, including the production of a new original series by Jonathan Goodson Productions. Both transactions were completed on December 7, 1992, eleven days before Mark Goodson's death. On June 6, 1994, Mark Goodson Productions left the company.

1994-1997: Game Show Network

Game Show Network was launched at 07:00. ET on December 1, 1994. The first show that aired was What's My Line? . From 1994 to about 1997, the network premiered pre-1972 classical game play and gaming performances made after 1972, mostly from the Mark Goodson-Bill Todman library. Network game impressions run in a 24-hour cycle, and also use live interstitials as a cover programming. In the first few months, GSN ads consisted of public service announcements (PSA), promotions for programming and advertising associated with Sony's parent network. In 1995, when the network began to grow, the network began to receive conventional advertising because it got a new sponsor. On March 17, 1997, Game Show Network was branded with new presentation packages and new logos (which have network names in colorful squares and spheres) and a new "All Play, All Day" slogan. While the logo changed, the program remained unchanged, the network also debuted new promos and new idends of the day, designed by graphic agency Lee Hunt Associates.

On October 11, 1997, network rights to the Goodson-Todman library expired, with the exception of the The Price Is Right and the 1994-95 season Family Feud (only the season in the second Richard Dawson era ), both of which are allowed to continue serving on channels on separate contracts. This period lasted until April 18, 1998. With other Goodson-Todman events gone, Sony's lesser known properties such as Juvenile Jury, The Diamond Head Game, the 1976- 77 version < i> Break the Bank , and Bill Cullen-hosted Chain Reaction Pass the Buck games all found their way into the schedule. Chuck Barris shows also aired during this time, including The Newlywed Game, The Dating Game, The Gong Show, Treasure Hunt /i> and 3 is Crowd .

Game Show Network also publishes a block of children's game events today, highlighted by Joker! Comedian! Joker! , Jep! , and Wheel 2000 - each adaptation from Joker Wild , Jeopardy! Wheel of Fortune .

1998-2004

On April 18, 1998, Game Show Network bought back the rights to the Goodson-Todman library. At the end of 1998, GSN removed all its live programs, replacing them with ads in shows like Win TV . In 1999, the network initiated a series of original programming, including Inquizition, All New 3's a Crowd and Hollywood Showdown. The channel also launches original shows like Extreme Gong (a remake of the classic Show Gong Show ). In 2000, the network faced another setback when the GSN lost the right to broadcast The Price Is Right , with the last episode aired on April 3 of that year.

In 2001, major changes in leadership and programming in the network took place. Liberty Media acquired a 50% stake in the network and changed its leadership. President Michael Fleming and vice president Jake Tauber were both dismissed and former Fox Family Channel president Rich Cronin was hired to head the network. He and the incoming vice president, Bob Boden, started the largest original programming effort since the beginning of the network, launching Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck , Friends or Enemies? , Russian Roulette , Lingo , WinTuition and Cram . In addition, in the fall of 2001, the network acquired the rights to broadcast the classic Press your Luck (excluding the episode of Michael Larson, due to pressure from CBS; this angered many fans, resulting in CBS finally giving Game Show Network rights for the Larson episode, airing it in a separate package, as well as along with the Big Bucks documentary: The Press Your Luck Scandal.

In the fall of 2003, Game Show Network grabbed rights to the ABC version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire with Regis Philbin, and in December, began broadcasting GSN Video Games, to air on networks that have nothing to do with traditional game shows. Although the rehearsals from the slightly dated English video game show (mostly Gamer.tv) - were short-lived, it was a sign of a network format change from the Game Show Network "all game events, all the time" to what eventually became "GSN: The Network for Games ". His last program using Game Show Network was Lingo .

In March 2011, DirecTV (which at this point has taken over the shares of Liberty Media on the network, which has risen to 65%) sold a 5% stake in the network back to Sony Pictures Entertainment; Although DirecTV has nominally remained a majority owner, it has handed control of the network to Sony, and has the right to force Sony to increase its holdings in GSN to 58%.

On August 23, 2012, GSN debuted The American Bible Challenge hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, which became the most popular program channel of all time, with the inaugural series watched by two million viewers.
