The tenth generation Ford F-Series is a line of pickup trucks produced by Ford from 1995 to 2004; it was sold from 1997 to 2004. In a major product shift in the Ford truck lineup, the F-250 and F-350 are divided from the F-150. Released in early 1998 (model year 1999) new branded Super Duty trucks have different body and chassis while still being branded as an F-Series truck.

The F-Series generation is also sold by Lincoln as Blackwood for the 2002 model (2002-2003 in Mexico). In Mexico, the F-150 changed its name to Ford Lobo from 2004 to 2010, when it was replaced by the twelfth generation model.

Development

In late 1989, during the late-stage development of the facelift at the end of 1991 for the 1992 model year, Ford started the PN-96 program on the new truck platform and appointed Thomas Baughman as chief engineer. In the mid-1990s, Andrew Jacobson was appointed as the design director for the PN-96 truck program. In 1991, designers have developed clay models that signal cars like styling, based on new design themes. Despite the refusal of the focus group on the "softer" style, during 1991 and 1992 in the concept design clinic, Ford's management supported the aero design philosophy. The final result by Bob Aikins was achieved in November 1992 and frozen for production in February 1993, taking further aero style with a round nose on the new F-series. The PN-96 donkey went into the 1993 test, with a prototype running from early 1994. The pilot production began in 1995.

1996-2003

Being the first major redesign of the F-150 since 1979, the redesigned truck went on an 87-stop national tour to the Ford plant and an external component supplier in October 1995, before it was launched. To build anticipation for a redesigned truck, the 1997 model was released in January 1996 with the first advertising campaign aired during Super Bowl XXX. Due to the radical style, Ford predicts from the marketing clinics that traditional truck buyers will not receive radical and like a car in 1997, thus continuing to produce and sell the previous 1996 model with a redesigned 1997 model for several months.

A variety of body options are available: regular cabin 2-3 passengers and 5-6 passengers SuperCab, 8Ã, ft (2Ã,Â,) and 6,5Ã,ft (2Ã,m) beds, and choice of Styleside or Flareside beds at 6.5 à , Ft (2 m) model. A new Lightning was introduced in March 1999, and the Harley-Davidson and King Ranch versions were also made for models of 2000 and 2001, respectively. In 2000, SuperCrew cabs were introduced with four full-size doors for the 2001 model. The 4x4 Sport model was introduced in 2000 as well. It displays the 5.4L Triton V8 and color-matching bumper and mirrored house, and is available in regular cabs and SuperCab in four colors: white, red, black, and silver. In 2002, the FX4 model was introduced, which came with a skid plate, a carbon steel frame, a Rancho shock absorbers, and a unique 17 "aluminum wheel along with more optional standard features on XLT.In 2003, the sporty STX trim package was introduced, intended for younger truck buyers STX package featuring a colorful front/rear bumper along with clear lens luminaires and integrated round fog lights This package also features chrome step rails, 17 "chrome wheels, and Kenwood Z828 stereo mounted on the radio premises Ford standard. Also in 2003, a special edition "Heritage Edition" package with a special badge was produced to mark the 100th anniversary of Ford trucks, only available in the 139 "Superbab wheelbase model.

Sales of the F-150 soared in the tenth generation from 750,000 to over 900,000 in 2001 as products from General Motors and Chrysler were left behind. Ford sales are down, however, for the last years of this generation as the redesigned Dodge truck was released.

The new F-150 was Truck of the Year by Truck Trends magazine in 1997. The minor facelift was introduced in September 1998, with little interior renewal for the 1999 model. In February 2000, SuperCrew was added to the lineup in early 2001 MY (Model Year), entered production on December 13, 1999. Ford also produced a limited run of "Heritage" (differentiated from 2003 "Heritage Edition"). -150s from body style 2003 to August 2004 as a 2004 model to complete production.

The F-150 generation was sold in Mexico until the twelfth generation model was released there.

Powertrain

A new line of improved engine efficiency is offered starting in 1997. A 4.2 L OHV V6, based on the Ford 3.8 L Essex V6, replaces 4.9 L OHV I6, while 4.6 and 5.4 liter SOHC V8 displaces 5.0 and 5, 8 liter OHV V8s. The 4.6 and 5.4 liter V8s are marketed under the Triton name and mark the first use of the Ford Modular Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) engine in the F-series pickup. Ford's own 8.8 IFS replaces the front end of Dana 44, while the Ford 8.8 rear remains. Ford Sterling 9.75 axle is also selected in heavy duty version. In 2000, the axle of 10.25 Sterling became an option.

Security

This generation F-150 received overall "Bad" ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the frontal offset test, and was ranked as the 2nd Worst Vehicle behind the 1997-2005 GM U minivan-platform.

Ford has found that the yacht control system in many of their trucks can catch fire, because the switch system can corrode over time, overheating and burning. The ignition is then blamed on spills from adjacent master cylinders. On March 5, 2007 Ford recalled 155,000 2003 full size pickups and full size SUVs for broken parts. During the previous two years Ford withdrew 5.8 million vehicles due to the cruise control system damaged in trucks, SUVs and vans. Remember that, one of the greatest in history, includes vehicles from the 1994-2002 model years.

Variant

F-250

With the introduction of the new F-Series, only the F-150 was produced. To bridge the gap between the F-150 model and the heavier previous generation (which will be replaced by the Super Tasks series for 1999), the lightweight F-250 was produced as a provisional model for 1997-1999. While externally similar to the F-150 (with the exception of 7-lug wheels), the F-250 gets increased load capability from heavy duty rear axle and rear load-level suspension.

This means there are two models F-250 1997. F-250 light duty is based on the new F-150. The F-250 HD (Heavy Duty) is in the same series as the F-350, continuing the old body style of the previous generation for last year's model.

After the introduction of the Super Duty version of the F-Series in 1998 as a 1999 model, the light duty version of the F-250 was discontinued; heavy duty suspension continued as a "7700" package for F-150 2000-2003 (recorded on the tailgate emblem).

SVT Lightning

The SVT Lightning is a sports/performance version of the F-150, released by Ford's SVT (Special Vehicle Team) division.

1999-2004

In 1999, after a three-year hiatus, the Ford SVT launched a new Ford Lightning powered by a modular 16-valve 5.4-Triton SOHC engine producing 360 hp (268 kW, 365 PS) and 440 ft lbf (600 N), with the Eaton supercharger installed by the factory. 4R100 automatic transmission is used, and the rear gear ratio is 3.55: 1. The Lightning is equipped with 18 "wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 295/45ZR-18 tires. The suspension system, which lowers the truck one inch in front and two inches behind, also modified from the standard F-150.It holds the front of the short and long-sleeved system with coil springs and a 31 mm thick stabilizer bar along with a rear axle shaft with a five-leaf spring and a 23 mm stabilizer bar.The Monroe shock is used from 1999-2001 later replaced by Bilstein shock from 2002-2004.

For the 2001 model year, the engine design was slightly altered to produce 380 horsepower (280 kW) @ 4,750 rpm and 450Ã, ft? Lbf (610Ã, N? M) @ 3,250 rpm. Also, the previously leaked intercooler was redesigned. This problem is addressed as a recall on the previous model. Cast iron blocks are used instead of aluminum. This increase is essential to support the 8 psi (0.55 bar) boost delivered from Eaton M112 root stock of the supercharger. Other engine revisions came in Model Year 2003 when the weakness in the head, lack of sufficient threads for spark plugs, has been overcome and repaired, although the "piston slap", light beats sound while the engine is cold, it still exists. At the other end of the drivetrain, the final drive ratio is shortened to 3.73: 1 with the back end of 9.75 inches in 2001. Also, in 2001 the drive shaft was increased in size to a 4.5 inch (110 mm) aluminum unit, 3.5 inches earlier (89 mm). The 295/45ZR-18 Goodyear Eagle F1-GS unidirectional tire developed was specifically enhanced using a new generation rubber compound GS rubber. With this engine and drivetrain revision, Car and Driver magazines drive Lightning from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.2 seconds. For 2003, Lightning cargo capacity was raised from  £ 800 (360 kg) to 1,350 pounds (610 kg).

Lightning second generation initially offered only Bright Red, Black, and White paint colors. Year 2000 Model brings Silver color additions to lineup. In 2002, True Blue, which was very dark blue, was offered, but was replaced with lighter Sonic Blue in 2003. Model Year 2003 also saw the introduction of the Gray Dark Shadow color.

These trucks were produced at the Ford Canada Truck Facility in Oakville, Ontario until closing. Special features specific to Lightning include:

  • 5.4 L 2V Triton Supercharged Intercooler V8 engine
  • 4-speed automatic 4-speed transmission with OD locking
