The Daewoo Lanos is a subcompact car manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Daewoo from 1997 to 2002, after becoming the car this year continues to be manufactured under license agreements to date in various countries around the world. It has also been marketed as Daewoo Sens and ZAZ Lanos in Ukraine, Doninvest Assol ZAZ Chance in Russia, FSO Lanos in Poland, or Chevrolet Lanos in Ukraine, Russia, and Egypt.
It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and initially featured three body styles: a three-door and five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. The Lanos designated the T100 model code when it was launched; T150 code applies to updated models introduced in 1999. In 2006, a van panel version, developed in Ukraine by ZAZ, was also introduced. The Daewoo Lanos is designed to replace Nexia Daewoo in the Daewoo line-up and itself is replaced by Daewoo Kalos.

Development
In 1992, Daewoo dissolved its joint venture with General Motors, and simultaneously the decision was made independently to develop contemporary Daewoo Motors products, based on older General Motors models. The Lanos development program officially began in the fall of 1993, with the aim of creating a car to replace Daewoo Nexia as a small family car Daewoo.
The project started with a comparative model study comparison of 20 different manufacturers, with Toyota Tercel, Opel Astra and Volkswagen Golf being identified as the most competitive. Four design studios are assigned to present clay models that present their ideas for new styling models. Giorgetto Giugiaro's design was chosen, and Italdesign was tasked with developing the ultimate styling and interior of the car. The technical side of the project is carried out simultaneously by the Korean Daewoo development center, as well as suppliers and contractors involved in the development of specific components. These include AC Rochester (engine components), Delco Chassis Division (brake, including ABS), GM Powertrain (automatic transmission), Italdesign (body, structural analysis, electrical, prototype construction), Passive PARS RÃÆ'ückhaltesysteme GmbH (airbag) and Porsche (vehicle concepts - research, structural analysis, suspension and brake components, and supervision of experimental production).
By the end of 1995, 150 prototypes were built (providing three body styles). The development program involves extensive testing in many locations. Security tests include high speed stability and durability testing in the UK, and brake testing at GroÃÆ'Ã
¸glockner in Austria. Low temperature tests were conducted in Canada, Sweden (Arjeplog), and Russia (Moscow, Khabarovsk) while high temperature tests occurred in the US (Death Valley), Oman (Nizwa), Australia (Alice Springs), Spain (Barcelona)), and Italy (NardÃÆ'ò). The program is completed in extraordinary time only 30 months from approval to commencement of large scale production of Lanos sedan for Korean market. The production of the European market began in 1997.

Technical details
The cars are equipped with E-TEC I4 with single cam and twin cam machines ranging from 1.5Ã, L (1498 cc 86HP) SOHC up to 1.6Ã, L (1598cc 106HP) DOHC. In the UK and many European countries (such as Italy, France or Austria) there is also a model E-TEC 1.4 (1349 cc 75HP) and 1.6 (1598 cc 106HP). The suspension is built on a Daewoo Nexia, as used in the Vauxhall/Opel Astra Mk2 GTE.
On the mechanical side, all versions of Lanos share the same section with some exceptions. The difference between the 1.6 DOHC engine version and the other version is:
- Version 1.6 DOHC features a 256mm front brake rotor and a 22mm master cylinder rather than a 236mm disc and a 20mm master cylinder found in other versions with smaller engines.
- The 1.6 DOHC version comes with a long D16 ratio transmission that has slightly larger dental ratios compared to the D16 short ratio found in other versions with less powerful engines.
- The 1.6 DOHC version comes with a more rigid front spring to compensate for heavier engines than the two SOHC engines found in other versions.
The four available models are S, SE, SE Plus, SX, and then, the SPORT model. S is a basic model and does not include many standard features (such as a CD player or power window). The SE is just a small step from the basic model S. However, the SX model usually includes CDs, radios, and cassette players along with power windows, power side mirrors, and fog lamps. Some select SX models even come with a sun-roof, though not many do. In later years Lanos, SE and SX models were dropped and replaced with a new trim line called SPORT (2001-2002). SPORT includes some features similar to SX, but also includes red/black leather seats and a metallic silver dash trim. Also, the SPORT model has a window control located on the door rather than the center console (as in the previous trim line).
Marketing and production
Outside South Korea, Lanos has been produced in Poland (from 1997 to 2008), Ukraine (from 1998 to present), Russia (produced briefly, starting in 1998), Egypt (from 1998 to present) and Vietnam (from 2000 until 2006). Most of the initial production was made using a complete knock-down kit (CKD) supplied to the FSO (in Poland), ZAZ (in Ukraine), TagAZ (in Russia), Daewoo Motors Egypt and GM Egypt (in Egypt) and VIDAMCO Vietnamese).
Europe
Starting in 2002, ZAZ equips several kits with the domestic MeMZ-307 machine and sells this version under the name Daewoo Sens ; This practice continues with the commencement of full-scale production of the T150 model. In December 2004, ZAZ adopted the Lanos chassis for full-scale production and installed new welding and painting lines. Starting March 2009, the updated version is called ZAZ Lanos (internal model T150). The engine is still supplied by GM Daewoo, although the Chinese developed machine from Chery Automobile has been installed and there are plans to build a 1.6Ã,à · L engine in the MeMZ plant.
In Poland, Fabryka SamochodÃÆ'ów Osobowych (FSO) factory in Warsaw started production of Lanos in 1998. Since January 2005, after the takeover of Daewoo by General Motors, Lanos produced in Poland went on sale under the FSO brand. It was produced until 2008, but only with pre-facelift external design
In 2005, General Motors contracted with ZAZ to provide a model of Ukrainian assembled Lanos for the Ukrainian and Russian markets, for import duty-free, thanks to international agreements, and sold through the GM dealer network. Sales of Chevrolet Lanos sedan began in Russia in November 2005. The Chevrolet brand was used to compete effectively with Renault Logan. From July 2009, marketed in Russia as ZAZ Chance .
In 2006, van panel variant from ZAZ Lanos was introduced.
Egypt
Since the end of 1998, the Daewoo Motor Egypt factory in Cairo started the Daewoo Lanos assembly in 4 doors and 5 doors with a 1.5 SOHC engine. The hatchback version is called "Juliet". The 4 doors are available in two versions:
- The S model is loaded with all options plus automatic transmission
- SX models that have A/C, power steering and radio cassettes plus manual transmissions
The 5-door version of Lanos (AKA Juliet) comes with complete options and manual transmission.
Toward the end of 2000 Lanos was introduced with different rear end designs and front raised faces (different front bumper and grille). It's called "Lanos II" in this special market. The SE version comes with all the options plus a manual transmission. The automatic transmission version was stopped immediately after the introduction of "Lanos II".
Between mid-2000 and 2001 the factory produced a more efficient 4-door version of Lanos II with no option at all except cassettes and sold by the Egyptian defense ministry to military officers at a fairly low price compared to the value of the car at the time.
Facelifting also includes Juliet's five doors to have the same changes as the 4-door version on the front but on the back it only has a different tail-light and bumper design than the completely different rear designs like the sedan, Juliet's production ceased in 2005.
In November 2008, Egyptian GM started producing Chevrolet Lanos on October 6 City, from equipment provided by Ukraine.
Sales
Australia and North America
The Lanos was finally removed after the 2002 model, replaced worldwide by Daewoo Kalos. Daewoo ceased operations in North America. After GM took over Daewoo to become GMDAT, Chevrolet began importing Daewoo Kalos, who was named Aveo, to North America starting with MY 2004. However, Lanos went on sale in Mexico and Latin America.
Models 2001 and 2002 follow the latest trend among cars intended for sale in many markets, where their asymmetrical backlights, with fog lamps and backlights occupy a complementary area on the driver's side and the passenger side respectively; consequently, the taillights are different between left and right drive instances.
Ukraine
In Ukraine, Lanos has been the best-selling car since at least 2006, and until 2014 (except 2012), produced by local ZAZ manufacturers with their own brand (starting from 2005).
Security
In Australia, Daewoo Lanos from 1997 to 2003 was assessed in the 2006 Used Car Safety Rating for providing "worse-than-average" protection for residents in case of an accident.
The European model : received the following assessment of the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) 1998:
- Adult Residents: , score 17
- Pedestrian: , score 11 (pre-2002 ranking)
In a collision test conducted by ANCAP in 1998 against the EuroNCAP regulations, the Lanos 3dr hatchback RHD showed poor performance, scored 0.31 out of 16 in the offset collision test and 6.98 from 16 in the side impact test. The Russian Autoreview Magazine tested the LHD Chevrolet Lanos T150 sedan built by ZAZ in 2006. It scored 10.5 of 16 points in an offset collision test.
