Celebdaq is an online "celebrity stock exchange" game on the BBC website that has its own TV show on BBC Three. TV show presented by Paddy O'Connell & amp; Libby Potter. Later, comedian Jenny Eclair became a presenter.

Players are given the opportunity to buy and sell shares on celebrities using Ã, Â £ 10,000 of virtual money. As in the real world stock market, stock trading causes the stock price of each celebrity to fluctuate, allowing profits to be realized. Weekly dividends are paid on shares owned by how many press coverage the celebrities receive in a number of daily newspapers and magazines. There is also a special version that focuses on the sportsman, called Sportdaq.

History

Celebdaq was launched on the BBC website in mid 2002. It was based on another very similar game, Popex.com has been 'trading' in musicians since 1998, and the Hollywood Stock Exchange. The Celebdaq code is a popex code port, with some additions. The website consciously mimics the financial arrangements of the Stock Exchange with stock prices fluctuating continuously over time.

After a slow start and a number of rule changes to prevent cheating, the game quickly gained popularity and weekly prizes for "Top Trader" instigated which consisted of Ã, Â £ 100 cash along with a replicate striped jacket worn by merchants on the floor of the stock exchange. The prize was then converted into a merchandise option.

The site was used to promote the new channel of BBC Three digital that opened the following year, and Patrick (Paddy) O'Connell, a former business correspondent and real-life stock exchange expert, was involved as a presenter of the BBC Three TV show tie-in broadcast from 14 February 2003 to March 18, 2004.

In 2004 Celebdaq was voted the best internet entertainment site on the Bafta Interactive award.

Until 2005, the BBC also provided an online message board for traders to discuss strategies and post tips for the coming week. Following an incident in which a football player who had issued an order prevented the publication of a story was named on the site, the BBC tightened editorial control and shortly afterwards the official message board Celebdaq was canceled altogether. Some MSN Groups were formed, where experienced players and former top merchants posted their weekly tips tips, but this ended with the MSN Group in 2009.

On January 7, 2010, the BBC announced the creation of a new Celebdaq game. Both games go together, with new games in beta. While it is possible to upgrade accounts, it is not possible to trade stocks already held.

Site Closes

Celebdaq and its networking site Sportdaq are both closed on Friday 26 February 2010 as part of a series of cuts to the BBC's online service. The BBC states that online operations require a "harsher new focus on quality and distinctiveness".
