The Cadillac ATS is a compact executive 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe manufactured and marketed by Cadillac and developed at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. Cadillac assembles ATS at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan.

ATS is based on the Alpha General Motors platform and is offered in rear or all-wheel drive configurations. The ATS base engine is a naturally aspirated 2.5 liter I-4 gasoline engine that produces 202 horsepower (151 kW), up to 2016 models. Optional engines include a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 petrol engine that produces 272 horsepower (203 kW) and a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6 engine that produces 321 horsepower (239 kW). The 2.0-liter engine replaces the 2.5-liter engine as the base engine for the 2017 model year. Diesel engines have been planned to be available in the future. All versions are equipped with a 6-speed 6-Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission. The 8-speed automatic transmission is introduced for the 2016 model year. The 2.0-liter turbocharged version, rear-wheel drive can be mated to a Tremec M3L TR3160 6 - optional speed.

Cadillac made its ATS debut for the press in the US in January 2012, putting ATS into production in July 2012 and started selling ATS in the US in August 2012 as a 2013 model. GM started selling ATS in China in November 2013. Cadillac currently sells ATS in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Middle East, China, Japan, and South Korea.

Development

GM engineers working primarily at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, United States developed ATS.

Rationale

Before ATS debut, Cadillac's smallest vehicle is a medium-sized CTS. CTS is comparable in price to compact competitors such as Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class but is comparable in size and weight to the more expensive BMW 5 Series. Although Cadillac believes that customers will love Series 5 cars at a 3 Series price, that assumption is proven wrong. Cadillac's research found that target customers who already own a vehicle such as Series 3 or A4 do not want a larger vehicle. General Motors started the development of smaller cars that would satisfy these target customers; the car eventually became Cadillac ATS.

Competitive benchmarking

To establish the parameters on which they will be designing ATS, GM engineers refer to the 1999-2006 BMW E46 3 Series, which ATS chief engineer Dave Masch and his team regarded as the most dynamic and driver-focused iteration of Series 3. The engineers emphasized low weight when developing ATS and their efforts to produce a finished vehicle that weighs less than the benchmark BMW E46. To achieve this result, Masch suggested that the team of engineers disregard the GM product development rules that, if followed, would result in heavier vehicles.

Marketing

Cadillac showed pre-production style pieces from ATS to the press on August 11, 2009. Cadillac debuted ATS production for the press on January 8, 2012. General Motors began selling ATS in the United States in August 2012 as a 2013 model. Sales in China began on November 21 2013. The Chinese vehicle market was originally imported from the United States by Shanghai GM. China-made ATS-L was launched in China in October 2015.

New platform and small refresh for 2015

During the initial development of ATS, GM engineers decided that downsizing GM Sigma II platforms supporting second-generation CTS would result in overloaded vehicles and using an economical front-wheel drive platform would sacrifice performance. Under the leadership of Dave Leone, GM engineers created a new platform designed to be lightweight and compact, to be capable of handling rear and all-wheel drive configurations and having a close 50/50 weight distribution. The new platform developed by GM engineers for ATS is now called GM Alpha platform.

For the 2015 model year, the updated Cadillac ATS gets the most styling from the Coupe version, the two-bar grille, the redesigned Cadillac emblem, seen on the first ATS coupe, and will eventually be placed on every Cadillac lineup. The exterior tweak for the front fascia Cadillac ATS 2015 has been lowered, and more selection of exterior paint has been made. The ATS interior is leftover for 2015, but has seen some simple technological updates for 2015 as well.

2016 model year changes

For the 2016 model year, the ATS replaces the 6L-6L45 automatic transmission with the new 8-speed 8L45 and 3.6L LFX V6 replaced with a new generation 3.6L LGX V6.
