History

This area was visited on 29 July 1769 by the expedition Portolá Spain - the first European to see the interior of Alta California. The party was camped in Brea Canyon, near a large native village and a small pool of clean water. The historical marker dedicated to his visit stood at Brea Canyon in the north of the city.

The village Olinda was founded in the present-day Carbon Canyon in the early 19th century and many businessmen came to the area to search for "black gold" (petroleum). In 1894, the landowner, Abel Stearns, sold 1,200 acres (4.9 km 2 ) west of Olinda to the newly created Union Oil Company of California, and in 1898 many nearby hills began. the newly discovered wood-based oil drilling tower at Brea-Olinda Oil Field. In 1908 the village Randolph , named for railroad engineer Epes Randolph, was established just south of Brea Canyon for oil workers and their families. Walter Johnson's baseball legend grew up in Olinda in the early 20th century where he worked in the surrounding oil fields as a youth.

Villages in Olinda and Randolph grew and joined as the economy soared, and on January 19, 1911, the city map was archived under the new name Brea, from the Spanish word for natural asphalt (also called bitumen, pitch or ter). With a population of 752, Brea was founded on February 23, 1917, as the eighth official city of Orange County.

As oil production declines, some agricultural development takes place, especially citrus and orange gardens. In the 1920s, Brea Chamber of Commerce promoted the city with the slogan "Oil, Orange, and Opportunity." In 1950 Brea had a population of 3,208. The citrus orchards give way gradually to industrial parks and housing developments. In 1956, Carl N. Karcher opened two Carl's Jr restaurants. the first in Anaheim, California and Brea, California. The opening of Orange Freeway (57) and Brea Mall in the 1970s spurred further housing growth, including major developments planned on the eastern freeway 57 in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. In the late 1990s, a 50-acre plot (200,000 m 2 ) from Brea's city center centered on Brea Boulevard and Birch Street greatly redeveloped into a shopping and entertainment area with cinemas, sidewalk cafes, clubs live comedies from the Improv chain, many shops and restaurants, and the weekly farmer's market. It is locally known and signed as Downtown Brea.

Sunset magazine named Brea one of the five best suburbs to live in the Western United States in early 2006.
