Apple Watch Series 3 review
src: fm.cnbc.com

Apple Watch is a series of smart watches designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It combines fitness tracking and health-oriented capabilities with integration with iOS and other Apple products and services.

Apple Watch relies on iPhones that connect wirelessly to perform many of its default functions such as calling and sending messages. However, WiFi chips in all Apple Watch models allow smartwatch to have limited connectivity features away from phones wherever WiFi networks are available. The Apple 3 Series LTE Watches can be used without the need to connect consistently to the iPhone, even though the iPhone is still needed to set up the device. Most Apple Watches currently manufactured require iPhone 5 or later with iOS 11; LTE 3 Series models require iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11.

Apple Watch was released on April 24, 2015 and quickly became a best-selling device with 4.2 million sold in the second quarter of fiscal 2015.

The second generation of Apple Watches was released in two levels in September 2016: Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2, while the first generation was discontinued.

Apple Watch Series 3 was released on September 22, 2017 simultaneously with the termination of Apple Watch Series 2. Apple is still producing the second generation Apple Watch Series 1 as an entry-level device.

Development

The goal of Apple Watch is to increase iPhone usage while also providing users with some additional new features. Kevin Lynch was hired by Apple to create technology that can be used for wrists. He said: "People carry their phones with them and see the screen so much." People want a level of engagement, but how do we give it in a slightly more humane way, a little more in times when you're back with someone? Apple's development is held very hidden until a Wired article reveals how some internal design decisions are made.

Rumors surround Apple's reusable devices as far back as 2011, which draft devices as iPod variations that will bend around the user's wrist, and Siri's integration features. On February 10, 2013, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple began developing IOS-based smartwatch with curved screens. On February 12, 2013, Bloomberg reported that Apple's smartwatch project is "outside the experimental stage of its development", and has a team of at least 100 designers working on the project. Further reports in March 2013 show that Apple plans to release the device by the end of this year. In July 2013, Financial Times reported that Apple started hiring more employees to work on smart hours, and that it was targeting a possible retail release by the end of 2014.

Unlock and release

In April 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that the company plans to launch a new product category that year, but did not disclose specifically. In June 2014, Reuters reported that production is expected to begin in July for release in October.

On September 9, 2014, during a press event in which iPhone 6 was also presented, a new product was introduced by Tim Cook as "the next chapter in the Apple story" with video focusing on the design and various band combinations and case styles that will be available to consumers. After the video was revealed, the auditorium was filled with loud applause and applause when Tim Cook reappeared onstage wearing Apple Watch. Cook explains that Apple Watch is "the right watch, an intimate new way to communicate from your wrist, and a comprehensive health and fitness device."

Compared to other Apple products and competing smart watches, Apple Watch's marketing focuses more on device advertising as a fashion accessory; 12-page advertising spread for Apple Watch on Vogue issues that focused primarily on the different combinations of body and band styles available, and underestimated the technological aspects of it. Apple then focuses on health and fitness-oriented features, competes with special activity trackers, and with WatchOS 3, develops it with fitness tracking for wheelchair users, social sharing in Activity apps, and Breathe apps to drive attention.

Release

Pre-ordering for Apple Watch starts on April 10, 2015, with an official release on April 24th.

This device is not labeled as "iWatch" (which will place it in accordance with pre-existing product lines like iPod, iPhone, and iPad) due to trademark conflict in certain areas; in the United States, the trademark "iWatch" is owned by OMG Electronics - a crowdfunding device of the same name, and owned in the European Union by the Irish company Probendi. In July 2015, Probendi sued Apple Inc. for trademark infringement, arguing that through keyword advertising in Google search engine, it causes advertisements for Apple Watch to appear on search results pages when users search for the trademarked term "iWatch".

Initially, Apple Watch is not available on the Apple Store. Starting April 10, 2015, subscribers can make appointments for demonstrations and installations, but the device is not available for purchases of goods and must be ordered and ordered online. CNET feel that this distribution model is designed to prevent Apple Store's location from having a long line-up due to high demand. The selected Apple Watch models are available in limited quantities in luxury boutiques and authorized Apple sellers. On June 4, 2015, Apple announced that it plans to market the Apple Watch model at its retail location. On August 24, 2015, Best Buy announced that it will start stocking Apple Watch at a retail store in late September. Both T-Mobile US and Sprint also announced plans to offer Apple Watch through its retail stores.

On September 9, 2015, Apple launched a new subset of Apple Watch in collaboration with HermÃÆ'¨s. This collection, dubbed "Apple Watch HermÃÆ'¨s," comes in a stainless steel body with an artificial leather band in a distinctive style from HermÃÆ'¨s. The following year, Apple launched another subset of Apple Watches that teamed up with Nike dubbed "Apple Watch Nike". Both subshops feature additional watch faces and exclusive bands for their brands, but instead function exactly like Apple Watch standards from their series.

Apple Watch went on sale in India on November 6, 2015. The device was also launched in Chile, Philippines, Indonesia, and South Africa.

Specifications

Design

Apple Watch is available in several variants, distinguished by different combinations of casing and interchangeable bands. Watches are available in two sizes: 38 mm (1.5 inches) and 42 mm (1.7 inches). The clock design has not changed significantly since it was released, so bands and customized accessories are usually compatible with Apple Watch anything of any related size. The watch casing includes a mechanism to allow the rope to be interchangeable. For inputs, watches include "digital crown", which can be rotated to scroll or zoom and press to return to the home screen, and touch screen equipped with Force Touch technology, which makes it sensitive to pressure and able to distinguish between tap and press. This watch also has side buttons that can be used to display your favorite contacts and access Apple Pay. Apple rated device batteries for 18 hours of mixed use. Apple Watch is charged by using inductive charging, using cables similar to MagSafe cables from the Apple MacBook laptop family. If the watch battery is reduced to less than 10 percent, the user is warned and offered to activate the "power backup mode", which allows the user to continue reading for an additional 72 hours. The watch then returns to its original mode when it is recharged.

Apple did not explicitly market the first-generation Apple Watch as waterproof, stating that it can withstand splashes (like rain and hand washing), but does not recommend immersion (IPX7). However, external testing by The Iconfactory and others reveal that Apple Watch can function when submerged under various conditions (such as swimming), even though the touch screen experiences an "erratic" behavior when submerged.

Apple introduced a high level of water resistance with the release of Apple Watch Series 2, and the device was explicitly advertised as suitable for swimming and surfing.

Hardware

First generation

The first generation Apple Watch uses a single-core S1-on-chip system. It does not have an in-built GPS chip, but rather rely on iPhone paired for location services. It uses a linear actuator called "Taptic Engine" to provide haptic feedback when warnings or notifications are received, and used for other purposes by certain applications. These watches are equipped with a congenital heartbeat sensor, which uses both infrared LEDs and visible light and photodiodes. All first-generation Apple Watch versions have 8 GB of storage; the operating system allows users to store up to 2 GB of music and 75 MB of photos. When Apple Watch was paired with the iPhone, all the music on the iPhone was also available for control and access from Apple Watch.

Apple Watch first generation will not accept watchOS clock 5.

Second generation

The second generation has two levels. Series 1 has a variant of the Apple S2 processor with a deleted GPS known as the Apple S1P. It has a lower starting price than first generation watches. Series 2 has a dual-core Apple S2 processor, waterproof up to 50 meters, twice as bright screen, and GPS receiver.

Third generation

The third generation of Apple Watch has faster processor, dual-core S3, Bluetooth 4.2 vs 4.0 on older models, built-in altimeter for measuring stair flights, increased RAM size, and is available in variants with LTE cellular connectivity. Siri can talk on Apple Watch Series 3 due to the increased processing speed of Watch. Apple Watch Series 3 is explicitly incompatible with iPhone 5 devices, which requires users to have an iPhone 5 or later for a special GPS model, or iPhone 6 or later for the mobile model.

Software

Apple Watch runs watchOS, whose interface is based around the home screen with a circular app icon (or in list view, depending on your configuration). The OS can be navigated using a touch screen or a crown on the side of the watch. During its debut, Apple Watch first generation must be paired with the iPhone 5 or later running iOS 8.2 or later; This version of iOS introduces the Apple Watch app, which is used to advertise Apple Watch, pairing with iPhones, customizing settings and loading apps, and highlighting compatible apps from the App Store.

With the release of watchOS 4 and Apple Watch Series 3, iPhone 5 support was dropped, requiring users to use iPhone 5 or more with iOS 11 to use watchOS 4. Apple Watches still running watchOS 3 or below remains compatible with iPhone 5.

Apple Watch is able to receive notifications, messages, and phone calls via a paired iPhone. "Glances" allows users to pan between pages containing information displays such as widgets; However, this feature was replaced by a new Control Center. WatchOS also supports Handoff to send content from Apple Watch to iOS or OS X devices, and acts as a viewfinder for iPhone cameras, Siri is also available for voice commands, and able to respond with voice prompts on the 3 Series watch. Apple Watch also supports Apple Pay, and allows its use with older iPhone models that do not contain near-field communications support (NFC).

Apple Watch's built-in apps are designed to interact with their iOS partners, such as Mail, Phone, Calendar, Messages, Maps, Music, Photos, Reminders, Remote (which can control iTunes and Apple TV), Stocks, and Wallets. Using the Activity and Training app, users can track their physical activity and send back data to the iPhone for use in Health applications and other software equipped with HealthKit. With WatchOS 3, Reminders, Home, Find My Friends, Heartbeat, and Breathe added to many stock apps.

Version history

WatchOS 1.0.1 features improved performance and support for emoji and additional languages, and was released on May 29, 2015. At WWDC 2015, Tim Cook announced watchOS 2.0; described by CNET as "significant change", it includes a new software development kit that allows more direct access to device devices, new watch face, email reply capabilities, and other features. watchOS 2.0 is set to be released on September 16, 2015, but is suspended because bug fixes take longer than expected; it was released on September 21, 2015.

WatchOS 2.0 features new features and more general improvements for Apple Watch. After the software update, some users encounter problems with the lag.

WatchOS 3.0 was announced at WWDC 2016, with priority on performance. Users can store applications in the memory as well as receive updated background and updated information. Other updates include a new Dock called with side buttons to replace a loaded glance of performance, an updated Control Center, and new reply options in Messages. Several new clock views have also been added, including Minnie Mouse, along with the ability to switch clock displays from the lock screen by just swiping. A new feature called SOS allows users to hold the dock button to make calls to the local emergency channel and retrieve the user's Medical ID. Another feature is Activity Sharing, which allows sharing exercises with friends and even sending their heartbeats to each other. A new app called Breathe guides users through breathing exercises throughout the day, with visual and haptic feedback. watchOS 3.0 was released to developers on June 13, 2016 and made available to the public on September 13, 2016.

WatchOS 3.1 was released to the public on October 24, and watchOS 3.2 was released near the end of March 2017. Both updates add minor fixes and bug fixes.

WatchOS 4.0 was announced at WWDC 2017 on 5 June 2017, and was released to the public on September 19th. WatchOS 4 features a proactive Siri watch face, personal activity training, and completely redesigned music app. It also introduced GymKit, a technology platform for connecting exercises with cardio equipment.

watchOS 4.3 was released on March 29, 2018. It introduced support for Nightstand mode in portrait orientation. It brings back the ability to play music on the iPhone to be controlled using the Music app on Apple Watch and also allows playback and volume control in Apple's HomePod. Other new features include new charging animations and new app loading animations. Activity data is added to the Left's clock display, and the battery has more accuracy to report the battery life.

Third-party apps

WatchOS supports third-party applications; the WatchKit app runs in the background on the iPhone as an app extension while a set of original user interface resources is installed in Apple Watch. Thus, the watchOS application must be bundled in their respective iOS apps, and synced to the watches manually, or automatically after phone application installation.

Starting June 1, 2016, the only new watch app allowed on the App Store will be developed with watchOS 2 (or later) SDK; no third-party languages or SDKs can be used to develop applications.

Reception

Following the announcement, initial impressions of technology and monitoring of industry observers varied; the watch is praised by some for its "design, potential ability and ultimate usefulness", while others offer criticism of the same aspects. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen said he was "impatient" to try it out, and Steve Jobs's biographer Walter Isaacson described it as "really cool" and an example of future technology "much inherent in our lives". However, Evan Dashevsky of PC Magazine says it does not offer anything new in terms of functionality compared to Moto 360, except for customizable vibration notifications. In November 2014, Apple Watch was listed by Time as one of 25 Best Discovery 2014.

Initial review for this device is generally positive with some warnings. Reviewer praises the potential of the clock to integrate into everyday life and the overall design of the product, but notes the speed and price issues. Many reviewers describe watches as functional and comfortable, while also noting failure to offer as many potential functions as the previous smartphone. Farhad Manjoo from The New York Times mentions a steep device learning curve, saying it takes him "three long, often confusing and frustrating days" to get used to it. Some reviewers also compare it with competing products, such as Android Wear devices, and claim "The Smartwatch Finally Makes Sense". Reviewers have mixed opinions about battery life though, with Geoffrey Fowler from The Wall Street Journal saying "the battery lives up to billing all day, but sometimes just barely," and the other compares it to Samsung Gear 2, which "runs through three days of moderate use." Bradshaw's team of Financial Times used several apps for several days. He concludes that there is no "killer app" so far apart from telling time, which is the basic function of a watch.

While using Apple Watch, some users have reported problems using heart monitoring features due to permanent skin conditions including tattoos. Watch uses photoplethysmography (PPG) technology that utilizes green LED lights to measure heart rate. To measure the user's heart rate, the watch will flash the green light of the LED on the skin and record the amount of light absorbed by the red blood pigment. However, under certain circumstances the skin may not allow the absorption of light to be read correctly and thus give inaccurate results.

Some users complain that the logos and text behind the Apple Watch Sport model, especially the gray space version, can easily wear off.

The first generation Apple Watch Edition, in which the 18k gold model sold from US $ 10,000 to US $ 17,000, received a warm welcome because the Apple brand "has not set its value in gold" compared to watches of similar prices from Rolex and Patek Philippe. These Swiss luxury producers are known for their "elaborate" product work justifying the high price tag. "An analyst suggested" What makes a high-end watch? This is the Swiss movement, the inner workings. That's why the collector bought it. This [Apple Watch Edition] does not have it. It incorporates a high-end case on the electronic part. "The inexhaustible is upgradable and will become obsolete in a few years like other tech gadgets. In addition, the Apple Retail Store that carries Apple Watch Edition will" completely contradict their current retail model ", according to the Security Jewelers Alliance, because "You can not ask people to touch it. You can not have it on the counter. You have the same problem with retail jewelry, in terms of theft interference, in terms of diversion, in terms of grab and run. "The second generation Apple Watch Edition is made of ceramics and sold at a much lower retail cost of US $ 1,249.

Sales

Financial analysts offer initial sales estimates of several million to as much as 34.7 million in the first year. Time ' s Tim Bajarin sums up the extent of the reaction, writing that "there is not enough information to determine how this product will work when it finally reaches the market next year."

Due to the lack of materials, Apple Watch shipping was delayed from the pre-order early release date of April 10, 2015. As a result, only 22 percent of Apple's previously booked Watches are shipped in the United States over the weekend after the release date. It is estimated that Apple received nearly one million Apple Watch pre-orders in the United States for the initial six hours of pre-order period on April 10, 2015, after which it was sold out and further orders will begin shipping in June. A report later by an analyst stated that Apple Watch had become a $ 10 billion business during the first year.

Apple has not revealed sales figures for Apple Watch. IDC estimates say Apple sent more than 12 million units by 2015. By the end of 2016, a veteran of the Swiss watch industry says Apple sells about 20 million watches and has a market share of about 50 percent.
